tell me about your cataract surgery
I was diagnosed 8 years ago. I am 47 now and glasses dont help anymore so it's that time. I am petrified! I have anxiety disorder so the thought of being awake while they do cataract surgery scares me to death! I need to hear stories if you had this done.

Re: tell me about your cataract surgery
Working with an Ophthalmic surgeon,I know that our anxious patients receive conscious sedation and sometimes a nerveblock.Cataract surgery these days has improved so much, that sedation is not required anymore. However, your eye is put asleep with deep penetrating anesthetic eyedrops.
There is an anesthesiologist in the OR monitoring you during your surgery.
Talk to your Ophthalmologist, tell your concerns etc.

Re: tell me about your cataract surgery
I had vitrectomy and lensectomy was awake. It really was a breeze, no pain. In my case they gave numbing eye drops, and a sedative via iv. Only advice I can give you is not to worry too much, it is fairly routine surgery these days. Also after surgery try to avoid touching your eye or rub it, for me it was hard because it was itchy when it was healing, just keep hands washed frequently. cheers and good luck

Stop worrying! I had the numbing eye drops for cataract surgery. I could feel pressure but felt no pain at all. But if you're nervous, a little IV sedation will eliminate your anxiety--and leave you with no memory of the procedure.
