Question Glasses - Spherical equivalent

Eye care professionals use the term spherical equivalent refraction (SER) to refer to an eye's effective focusing power if only spherical aberration were present.
Can someone explain simply what is S.E and its importance in glasses prescription ?

and can a lens with sph and cyl replaced by a SE one safely ?
