    temporary blindness in left eye

Every like 3 months or so, for about a year and a half, I've had this weird thing happen with my left eye. There will be this crooked line that forms in my left field of vision. It's kind of rainbow-y and I can't see through it. It will slowly grow in size and move, and then eventually fade away. The whole thing lasts like 1-2 hours, and by the time it's done, the line will have traversed, at some point, every point in my left field of vision. When it's at it's peak, I can't really see anything with my left eye at all. The next couple days my left eye vision will be a little worse. For those couple days it will often feel like there's moisture collecting on my left eye, and I'll have to wipe it away with my finger. My left eye vision will get worse when I'm stressed. Usually though, it'll go back to normal after a couple days.

It happened again a couple days ago, only I haven't recovered like I usually do. When it happened all the the times before, I always kept my eyes open the whole time until it passed. This time, about 20 minutes into it I went to sleep. I'm constantly having to wipe moisture from my left eye and adjust my eyelids. Additionally, it feels like it's sensitive to bright light. I also noticed last night that my left pupil was bigger than my right one (although not by much). When I checked again this morning, my left pupil was a little smaller than my right one. I'd never noticed this happening before.

I've never had any other problems with my vision. When I was a kid, I remember the optometrist telling me my left eye vision was a little bad (astigmatism I think, but I'm not sure I remember correctly), but it was never bad enough to where I had to get glasses.

I'm 22 years old. About a year ago I had a small stroke. It was very small, and I recovered 95% within a 4 or 5 days, and 99% within a couple months. The stroke was in the left side of my brain. They never figured out what caused it, and I'm not currently on any medication or treatment for it. I never brought this eye thing up with any of my doctors, because at that time this had only happened once or twice, and it didn't even come to my mind.

I know I should see a doctor, and I plan to, but due to my circumstances right now I won't be able to for a couple of weeks. In the meantime I'd like to have some sort of idea of what this is and whether or not I need to treat it more urgently. Any idea what this could be?

What you described (the crooked line, rainbow) that's called migraine aura. It's the visual disturbance without the headache (some people get them right before a headache) It usually starts in the center of the vision, maybe you are on the computer and it will blank out one letter in a word, then get bigger and bigger and zig zaggy in rainbow colors. Very common
I don't know why it lasts so long though, normally 20 minutes is length of time.
The other things don't even seem related because what you described is exactly migraine aura. You could google image, "migraine aura" and check out some of the pictures. None look exactly like mine, but some are pretty close.
    maybe you'll recognize it.

Re: temporary blindness in left eye

I had a stroke in my Optic Nerve which started with symptoms just like a migraine. Problem for me is the blindness never got better. Please go to an opthamologist/neurologist right away and one who might specialize in NAION or AION...
