| Handicap sticker?
Has anyone with fibromyalgia been able to secur from a doctor a handicap sticker? My situation is one with three kids and a disabled husband. He can't help with the kids, and since two of them are under two, it is really hard for me to find parking spots wayyyyyyyyyyy out in the parking lot. By the time I finally get into the store, I am so exhausted I really want to turn around and just leave. Things are great if I have my husband with me and we use his sticker, but I am the kind of person who would never use his sticker without him being there. Didn't know if anyone had had any luck in procuring one for themself, and what steps they had used to get one...I am in Illinois, and don't know if laws are different for each step.
thanks |

Hi, I have had a handicap placard for quite a few years now and yes it is because I have Fibro. Just because they don't know much about it yet does not mean that it isn't a disabeling desease.

ummm, what state do you hail from, and how did you get it, my doctor told me that its not a neuro type thing, so he won't sign off on it...think i need a new doctor, but also need to find out what they have to sign off on for it

SONSHYN,
Yes you need a new Doctor. Our problem IS NEURO! Why else would we have so much muscle pain and why would most of us be on Neurontin med. It helps deaden the nerve endings, so we don't feel so much pain. I live in Ohio and wish you luck.

Hi there,
I went to my town hall and applied for a handicap tag. I remember just answering some questions about my handicap and that was it. I don't think I had to secure anything from my doctor to get the tag...maybe they called to verify. I was really surprised that it was so easy to obtain right on the spot... of course that was back in 1998. I've also had a tag renewal until 2008. So i would try applying at your town hall. Good Luck, because i know how exhausting that can be when you have to park so far away.
Nancy~

I have had mine for about a year. I live in WI...I see a GP for my fibro symptoms...it was my Dh that said I should ask about it. My doc had no problems at all ...he said it is understandable that I would need to be close in order to accomplish going to a store or anywhere else for that matter. I was very happy that he saw things that way! At first it was uncomfortable for me to use it...and still if there is an open spot next to the handi cap one ..I will park there and let someone else who is maybe worse off than me take it. But, for example...if you saw me walk across the room today...you would probably wonder why I don't have a cane or even a wheelchair...I look pretty pitiful today!LOL

Hi. I live in Alabamba and I had my Rhuemy sign a form for me (it had to be a form from the DL bureau in Alababma), but I was emphatically informed by my Rhuemy that she was giving it to me for the injury in my back, NOT for FM. She said that she wants her FM patients to walk. I didn't care at the time, cuz she was signing the stupid form! LOL My Rhuemy is a bit of a drill sergeant! LOL, but I have a wonderful pain doc who offsets her strictness. I got the handicap license plate and the hang tag for 5 years, then I guess you have to get another form filled out.
Hope this helps. I guess, basically what we are all saying here is to ask your doc, and if that doc doesn't say yes, ask another doc until you can find one to help you. Do you have a Pain Management Specialist? Those are the best doctors to get on your side. Their purpose for treatment is specifically pain, and everything that goes along with having chronic pain.
Have a good holiday.
