    Question Ankle and foot pain??

I remember back to the beginning of my FMS onset as the first symptoms being painful feet on arising each morning. I really passed it off as not being used to the hardwood floors in my new residence. I had rugs all over in every room but I would cringe with pain each morning and it would seem to get better after a shower and getting to work and walking for a bit. It has increasingly become pretty constant. It seems to be a combination of pain, aching and burning. I consider my footwear to be adequate. I have since bought several pairs of lightweight tennis shoes that are recommended for women with foot problems and also bought some memory foam houseshoes and some pricey sandals to be on the safe side.

I noticed after a while of the initial symptoms that my shoes would feel like they weighed a ton. I could walk for just a short distance and they would ache so much I would have to get them up on a ottoman or footstool. I even got to the point that any socks would "hurt" my feet. I attributed that as pressure on the feet.

Now I have an ankle that hurts when I walk, when I lay down, when I am sitting. Heck it even hurts to have a sheet over it when in bed. It hurts if it is pointing upward, sideways, etc. It is not swollen or red or any other visible signs of abnormality. It just hurts all the time. I have not seen this mentioned before in Fibromaylgia and I wondered if any others have this horrible symptom. I don't know about the men, but I know ladies will throw out the most expensive, scrumptious looking shoes if they hurt their feet. I don't know what else to do. Any ideas? Would a "oh, my aching feet" be appropriate here?

i have arthritis in my feet, also the burning type pain from fibro. my foot doc told me to only wear birkenstock shoes and sandles....also use the sandles for slippers...and new balance #592 sneakers. it cost me quite a bit when i started, but now i wait til the end of every season to get them on sale. i know that no stores near me carry birkenstock, so i buy them on the internet. also the sneakers not everyone carries, but i found mine in a sports authority store. my ankles have not started hurting, thank god!..hope this helped you some.......bevann

Goldyfm, my feet were the thing to blow my goals last week. They hurt a lot in the morning. Later on in the day, it feels like I'm walking on stones. This last week, my right ankle, from just under the ankle through the heel, was really painful. By evening, nothing feels that great on my arms/hands, neck, calves, and sometimes my feet. I can be driving and have to yank off the shoes and socks because it feels claustrophobic--that's the way all of that feels--just claustrophobic--I feel like a loony when the need to get stuff off me feels that urgent. So yeah, ankle and foot pain, I can relate.

Yes, I love the Birkenstocks also. I have several pair of their sandals. I bought Rykka for Tennis shoes but at times, I feel like barefoot is the best also. I know the feeling of shedding clothing and shoes. I see it as a strange feeling comes over and I simply must get out of my clothes; into a more friendly attire such as loose pjs. I have recently become more and more into the comfy clothes and even though I suffer from cold feet (always have) I have to shed the socks and shoes for a houseshoe. I thank you both for your contributions. At least, I know I am not the only one who hates to take a step!

hey, thanks for the advice on the shoes, I'm definitely going to try and buy a pair of birkenstocks or something.

goldyfm, you are definitely not alone with foot and ankle pain. It gets pretty extreme for sure. however, because yours are not just in pain but really sensitive to touch, and the pain is only in your feet/ankles it sounds a little bit like RND / SND (reflex neurovascular dystrophy / sympathetic neurovascular dystrophy - they're the same) and if it never gets any better I would suggest seeing a doctor because often physical therapy is the only thing that can help it go away.

    hope this helps,
    allie

My doctor recommended a good walking shoe...I only wear New Balance (I ordered a new pair yesterday at JCP online). He said don't even put your bare foot on the floor when getting up in the morning. He wanted me to put on my shoes immediately and keep them on all day. Well, it's really helped a lot. If I forget to do it, I noticed how achy my feet are. Try it, it might help you. It's helped my husband who used to wear memory foam slippers...awful, around the house all day. He suffers from RLS and noticed a big difference when wearing shoes. Good luck! Kate

Yes that is exactly how my feet feel in shoes. I do have a pair of New Balance shoes and it seems worse when I wear them. Makes me think that my toes are suffocating. Thank you for posting that, now I know it's not just me being loony.

****** is running a special on Birkenstocks right now, just wanted to let you guys know. My daughter works in a shoe store and agree's that they are selling them at a good price. If i see them cheaper anywhere else i will surely let all know. Glad there are shoes that help make things easier on our feet and ankles.

    Re: Ankle and foot pain??

My feet in the morning were the first sign that something was not right. I would wake up and go to walk, and the pain was horrible, and it still is. My hands are also sore and I notice that in the middle of the night when I wake up and try to use my hands they are in a lot of pain. In the morning, they are swollen some days too.

If I am on my feet too long, I am in more pain. I try my best to stay off my feet if I can. That is sad, I am only 31, and I have 2 small boys, 2 and 4. I am trying to exercise on the treadmill, and then do my daily chores. If I have a day where I do too much I am in pain, and my body says "stop and sit."

I did buy a new pair of sneakers, and that helped. I used to wear nice sexy high heeled shoes when I worked, and now I do my best to wear them to church for 2 hours, and then I can not wait to take them off. I have a couple of pairs of danskos and they are hard on my feet, but I am curious to see how my birkenstocks will do this summer.

Good luck to all in finding good shoes that work to let us be more comfortable.

    Re: Ankle and foot pain??

Hey, Jeannie, a very big welcome! Obviously this thread was much needed. I just saw my pain specialist about the same thing; he said to sit up with my legs straight out in front of me, then hold a towel in one hand, pull it around the top of my feet, hold the other end in my other hand and pull toward me so I can gently stretch my feet. He said it was all knotted up in my feet like it was in my neck. Also sweetjerseygirl said it helped to use horse linament all over her's. McBeth he called the loony part (where I have to pull off stuff) a skin sensitivity and I think it goes along with this stuff. He said the same thing about my arms. So... neither one of us are that loony, huh?

Oh sounds like my feet. Haven't slept with top sheet for a long time. Have advanced arthritis in one. Had to stop wearing athletic type shoes. Purchased a pair of aravon orthopedic sandles on sale and They are wonderful. Also have orthotics that go in my easy spirit slip on's.

    Re: Ankle and foot pain??

Thanks to all of you for your contributions to this thread. I felt so petty complaining about my feet hurting, but I feel better to know that I am not nuts, it has to be the fibro. Allie, I had a PAD workup a few weeks ago at my cardiologist, so the circulation is fine there. I do have RLS (on Requip) and have almost kicked myself out of bed at times. I have horrible pain in the legs at times, and I do massage my feet every night with lotion. I have just started using Biofreeze on my legs every night to ward off some of the pain. I will try the stretching as someone described. I have always done foot pumping exercises when I have a bad day and lie down more than up. I try to avert any thromboli in the legs, Gee, we have so much to deal with and worry over.

I do try to wear shoes, but I have a hard time keeping them on. Even the lightest of footwear feels like they weigh a ton on some days. Has anyone tried Lidoderm patches for the RLS or the pain in the feet? I just wondered if they would stay on (they are so expensive) during the night.

thanks again for all the info and ideas. I get more info here than from all the doctors I have seen.

    Re: Ankle and foot pain??

I just had to add to this thread. My feet are the ringer in all my problems. They are the reason I have not been able to work for close to three years now. Started with just always terribly sore and achey, even with little or no activity. Progressed to burning. It began innocently enough as a sensation of tingling like when you sit wrong and loose circulation. I worried about PAD, but I have fairly good circulation. I remember at the time trying an OTC herbal that is really good for circulation, but it wasn't helping with the pain and burning. I can't remember what it's called anymore.
The burning knocked me off my feet because it got to the point (there now) where it felt like I had a chemical burn on the bottoms of my feet. It's like trying to walk on feet that have litterally been burned with fire.. it even felt like the soles of my feet were loose, like a solid blister instead of just the padding of our feet. Sometimes it feels like I have several rock bruises on all the pressure points. Most days I make it fine around the house, as long as I don't stay "on" my feet more that 5 to 10 minutes at a time, I can just push through the discomfort... other days I might be able to go with Hubby and friends on a shopping outing and last most of the day as long as I take 15 minute breaks every half hour or so... still other days, I put off simple things like just going to the bathroom even, because it's just too much to bear. I have to wear socks because the tops of my feet are so sensitive to touch. They are so sensitive that if you were to gently brush across them with a soft feather, it would feel like you just scraped rough sandpaper rudely across them. And, I get the "claustraphobic" feeling with my feet too... sometimes just have to get them bare... then a little later, just got to cover them up again. It's not fun.... but I can manage. Always do, but what choice does one with Fibro have?

Well, thanks for letting me vent about one of my biggest Fibro peeves. LOL.

Ishla, that's awful. Has anyone tried massage? Although, I can't imagine how you could do massage with the whole skin sensitivity issue. Has anyone found an answer to that?
