    Angry peroneal tendonitis or what?

i hurt my ankle around two to three months ago and i got an mrs and they said that i have tendonitis due to a lot of fluid around the tendon in my ankle and im wondering if i am going to have to need surgery or could the MRI not be showing all the damage due tot he fluid? it has been almost three months and it is still swollen and still in pain after being on crutches for two weeks and in a boot the rest of the time. it is worrying me cuz i haven't done any exercising and have been resting it like crazy and there is still pain and it is still swollen. i did trying the other day though to lightly jog on it (pretty much a fast walk) and it was like extremely sharp pains in the tendon and my arch started to burn really bad. i read that they usually tell you to wait 6 months and if it still hurts then the surgery will be needed but sense I'm a college athlete i couldn't wait that long to know sense that would be another season i would be out. it also feels really weak i had to have my ankle taped like crazy and put a brace on just to be able to jog lightly on it. I have rolled my ankle alot! i do it probably twice or three times a season but i am always able to go back to playing in like two days with taping and putting a brace on but i am not able todo it this time. I already made an appointment to have to checked out by another doctor but I'm just seeing if they would make me have surgery on it.

I don't think they usually do surgery for tendonitits. The treatment for that tends to be rest (which means no attempts at jogging!). Ankles heal very slowly because there is not a good blood supply so far from the heart.

If you had a tear it probably would have shown up. I don't think fluid would hide the tears since there is usually going to be fluid around a tear.

The best thing you can do is see a foot/ankle certified orthopedist (not a regular ortho or a podiatrist) or a sports med ortho specializing in the foot/ankle. You need the best possible drs and those are your best bets.

As far as what you can do, keep it elevated above your head as much as possible (this means you are in a semi-reclined position and the foot is on about 4-5 pillows), ice several times per day 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off or whatever your providers have told you, be very strict with the boot and crutches as ordered, don't try to overdo (trust me. I was an athlete who pushed through a fractured ankle because I was more concerned about the sport than the pain and it landed me with ankle reconstruction surgery after I tore numerous tendons and ligaments 20 years after the fracture. Had it been treated properly initially I would have healed and been fine in all likeliehood).

If you have tried conservative treatment for a while and were unsuccessful surgery may be an option. Peroneal tendonitis was part of my problem (i also had a tear and dislocated tendons). I tried conservative treatment for 2-3 months (walking boot, rest, therapy) and the pain just got worse. I agree with above to see a foot & ankle orthopedic surgeon. Doesn't hurt to get an eval from one, they really are the best specialist to see. I'm sure you will get an MRI so they can get a better idea of what is going on in there. My own MRI showed tendonopathy and fluid, when i had surgery they found the tear and dislocation as well. Just be aware that imaging isn't perfect but it's a start
