Question ADVICE NEEDED - Foot/Ankle Pain - 2 Separate Diagnoses

BACKGROUND: I am not athletic at all...however that did not stop me from participating in a players vs. parents soccer game with my daughters team. I ran a little and even managed to kick the ball a few times. I also got kicked in the area where your foot meets your leg toward the inside of my ankle when you are looking straight down at the foot. (Right foot). There was a little swelling and a small bruise but not really any pain after the initial kick. This was on 02/25/2017.

About a week later I started to get the feeling that the top of my foot and my ankle needed to pop, this was intermittent, not constant and more of a nuisance than pain. I also started having pain on the outside of my foot towards my little toe. There has been some swelling on the top of my foot and around my ankle but again, not constant. Then at work I turned around with my foot planted firmly on the ground and had a searing sharp pain around my ankle / heel below the bone on both sides, it subsided after a few minutes but swelled up some. This has happened several times since then when I pivot (which I try not to do now), if I step wrong or if I am on my feet for too long. The pain goes away with time.

I went to my regular doctor who said I "strained" my anterior tibiofibular ligament and prescribed steroids. He did not do any x-rays. I have full range of motion in my ankle and foot. The pain usually starts if I am weight bearing. That evening the "need to pop" feeling could also be felt in my lower leg where there is no joint.

Yesterday I went to an orthopedic sports doctor who did take x-rays but diagnosed a neuroma and prescribed Aleve. I am beyond frustrated as I do not think that this could be correct since the pain in my ankle and now lower leg was not addressed. The need to pop feeling throughout my foot, ankle and now leg is becoming more frequent and somewhat painful, the searing pain is also becoming more frequent.

I have scheduled an appointment with a foot and ankle specialist but cannot be seen until late next week.

Any advice or similar stories and outcomes is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

As long as the doc you are going to see is an ortho who is Foot & Ankle Board certified, I'd go see him. If not, you are wasting your time.
