PTTD surgery January 10 only 6 wks non-weight bearing

I have had PTTD diagnosed 12 years ago. I got along by limiting activities and then eventually wearing an ankle brace. Then the bones shifted visibly in my ankle this fall and the pain got worse so I saw the surgeon again and finally decided to have surgery. It's scheduled in 5 days. I am 72 years old and the surgeon says that I will be non-weight bearing for only 6 weeks. Does that sound reasonable?

I should have explained what the surgeon is planning on doing. I will have a subtalar fusion, cotton osteotomy, screws from the top of my foot into the heel and tendon debridement. He said that I will have nerve blocks for the surgery with light anesthetic. Because I have a number of health issues they plan on having me in the hosptial for 3 days then to a nursing/rehab facility.I don't know ow long I will have to be in the facility.

Hi Georgia chicken, I also had subtalar fusion along with two other procedures but not as extensive as yours and I was non wb 8 wks and I'm in my 40's. maybe he'll extend it cuz that is quite a bit of work and also your age. As we age bones take longer to heal. Will you have access to computer? Keep us posted. Also make sure dr puts in for miralax it helps especially since you'll be on narcotics. Colace doesn't work and that's the one they usually give in hospital. Dr needs to order it for you

Thanks, I will have my Kindle fire with me and can log on from there. I don't know if I will be able to ask questions at my pre op Monday. I hope to be able to ask about it then, but I don't think that I will be able to.

At least I won't have to worry about constipation. I don't have a colon! LOL

I had my surgery on 10/31/17. It was outpatient and had a nerve block. The pain was bad for the first couple of days but very managable after that. I only took pain meds at night. I was in a splint for the first 2 weeks and them NWB cast for 7. It was supposed to be 6 but had an extra week due to Surgeon being on vacation when it was supposed to come off. I think the extra week may have helped avoid a boot. Best purchases I made prior to surgery: Raised toilet seat, shower stool and handle for the tub if that is any help.
