6 weeks post ankle fusion

Hi everyone! Just checking in since I am 6 weeks out of my ankle fusion. I saw the surgeon this morning and the x-rays look good. I can start to weight bear partially with a boot and crutches. He wants me to try and be just walking with the boot in 2 weeks.
Question I have though: I asked about PT and he said no for now. He said maybe a little PT when I go back in 5 weeks. This surprised me. I assumed I would need PT to help with gait pattern to avoid limping. What have other people experienced with PT after a fusion?
How are the rest of the recovery processes going for those who had fusions recently? I know there were a few of us that had surgeries close together. Check in if you can.

Wow it's already been 6 weeks since your surgery! Glad you are doing well. I am 14 weeks out, started therapy last week. I also thought I was going to start therapy about 8 weeks. I was non wb 8 wks then stayed in a boot for another 4 wks and beared weight as tolerated, I would use a rolling walker and now I'm wearing regular shoes with lace up brace. I am glad that I didn't do pt earlier, the extra time helped prepare my foot. My foot does swell since I started walking but it's normal. If I do too much it lets me know and I'll rest. I don't take any pain meds except on therapy days. So recovery is coming along, slowly but it's going. There are some pains as my foot is adjusting but that's to be expected. I do limp but usually only when I've been on it too long and it's tired. Oh and I use a cane cuz my calf feels weak since I was nonwb for so long.

Re: 6 weeks post ankle fusion

Thanks for the reply. Funny you think the 6 weeks went fast for me and I think it took forever. I am glad to hear that you are doing well and that you are walking pretty well. My MD did say he will consider PT when I go back at my 11 week mark. I guess I have to be patient.
I am walking very short distances with my boot and 2 crutches. It is painful and very slow. I am going to keep setting a distance for each day and try to make improvements each day.
Good luck with PT. Keep me posted on your progress. It helps to see where you are in recovery since you are about 2 months ahead of me in recovery. Take care!

Haha yea it always seems fast for others except for the one going through it! Take it slow, you will see improvement every week. I'll keep you posted. You keep me posted on your progress too. Be patient, remember our recovery is long but worth it
