    Using Bathroom with Knee Scooter

I am worried about using the bathroom after my foot surgery. I will be on a knee scooter, non-weight bearing and have been told my foot can't touch the floor and it must always be touching a cushion. So - I go into the bathroom on my scooter where there will be a seat riser and the side bars. Now, how do I get from the scooter on to the toilet seat without my foot touching the floor? And up again ?? My foot will be in a cast probably 1/2 way up to my knee.

If you don't have enough upper body strength to move yourself around to that then a traditional walker would be a better option. Either way, your surgeon can send you to PT to teach you how prior to surgery.

I am currently non weightbearing having to use a knee scooter. What I do is back up to the toilet and look behind me to see where the handles on the toilet seat/riser are. I angle myself to lower myself, hanging on to one of the handles. I keep the other hand on the brake so the scooter doesn’t shoot out in front of me. When I get up, I push off with one hand on the toilet seat handle and the other hand on the brake /handlebar of the scooter. Before I get up, I reach behind me to flush the toilet and arrange my pants so they will be easy to pull up once my knee is on the scooter. I hope you have a chance to practice before your surgery.

Re: Using Bathroom with Knee Scooter

I am sure you figured it out, but I used a knee scooter for 5 months after having foot reconstruction surgery, had to keep it elevated and non weight bearing for all 5 of them. I would stop my scooter in front of the toilet so that it was horizontal to it. I would spin around a little on one foot, (I got a toilet seat with the riser and handles), I could grab onto the handles and sit down letting my foot/leg slide back and rest on the seat. That way it was still elevated and easy to get back up, for me, anyway...
