    Ankle Distraction Surgery

Hi, I am new to healthboards,
Two years ago my 29 year old daughter fell in a deep lawn hole and had a traumatic trimalleolar fracture. Later that year a second surgery was planned to remove the hardware in hopes of relieving pain and to help regain some mobility, the surgery had to be rescheduled when my daughter found that she was pregnant. She now has an active 6 month old son. She finally had the surgery at the end of July, she is in physical therapy now. She is still in pain every day and unable to take her son for walks in his stroller, go up and down the he stairs with laundry etc. He doctor thinks that she will need an ankle replacement down the road but that she is too young now. We are researching ankle distraction surgery. Does anyone know about or had that treatment?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Ankle Distraction Surgery

    Hello Katpie,
I had an ankle distraction 6 years ago. It did not work for me but a lot of people are happy they had the procedure. But it is hard, especially with a baby in the house. I advice you to look at older threads about ankle distration and find a specialist with experience.
Best wishes fir your daughter and you

    Re: Ankle Distraction Surgery

Sorry to hear about your daughters ankle. I was told something similar by my doctors and like you turned to the internet to find an alternate solution. Long story short, I sought out the best doc in my area and underwent the distraction arthroplasty. I had my ex fix removed this past August and I’m still improving little by little. It took me roughly 2 months after exfix removal to completely ditch my crutches. My ankle is still very stiff, however I gained dorsiflexion but lost plantar flexion post surgery. Once I get moving and warm up my ankle I’m able to walk around just fine with little pain. My doctor said it’ll be roughly a year before I see most of the improvements gained from this surgery, so I still have some gains coming my way.

I’m 27 and lived a very active lifestyle prior to my injury, this brace is going to give me that back. My doctor turned me onto the Exo Sym and it’s truly awesome. It takes a few weeks for them to make the device, which means you’ll have to travel to their clinic twice. I got fitted two weeks ago and am flying back next week to pick up my finished brace. While there I was able to try an early version of my brace and It’s like magic. I haven’t been able to move like that since my injury, and I was pain free.

If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. I hope I didn’t jump all over the place and confuse you. It’s been a long process.
