    Question ankle problems

hey everyone..i hope someone here can help me out. i have hurt my ankle more times than i'd like to recognize in my life... i'm only 21. and i've torn ligaments in the side of my ankle, broken my ankle, sprained my ankle, more times than anyone i know. i never had surgery or anything, just casts and physical therapy and whatnot. and ever since my last ankle injury, which was a pretty bad one...i've had problems with my ankle. it feels "weird" if you will, all the time. can't move it ways i can twist and turn my other ankle. sometimes i get pain...and lately, it hurts pretty much all the time. and i don't do anything strenuous either. sometimes just walking causes pain in my ankle. sometimes my ankle will just "give out" and i almost fall. it is getting pretty bad, and i am sooo incredibly scared. but i don't know what could possibly be wrong. i have had no injuries to said ankle since the last one which was probably like, almost 3 years ago. so i really am at a loss. i don't know what could be wrong. any help????? i mean, i know i should ultimately go see a doctor...but i just want to get an idea of w hat could possibly be wrong. i dunno. thanks in advance.

It sounds like you have an issue with ankle stabilty and maybe with all of your past injuries you have a ligament or tendon that has not been corrected. I am nine months post-op form a Brostrom Repair. I had at some point blown a tendon and have put up with mysterious swelling and some pain until I saw a podiatrist (who specializes in foot and ankle surgery). He made an initial diagnosis which was later backed up with an MRI.

I suggest that you either see a podiatrist who specializes in foot and ankle surgery or an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in feet and ankles.

    Wish you the best. -eko

I have a stack of about 50 clinical papers on ankles. I recall one of them discussing a very high rate of post traumatic symptons of patients who have had severe ankle sprains. People who have a severe sprain can develop talar dome lesions. I believe that arthroscopy is one of the treatments. A good foot and ankle surgeon should be able to help determine the exact problem. Use some of the proffesional web sites for foot and ankle surgeons to find more information. If I find the paper about ankle trauma, I will post the link for further reading. Good luck.

I totally agree with everyone else. I'm on my 2nd ankle surgery for instability.
2 years ago when I had my first ankle injury, the doctor's couldn't figure out what was wrong. I could walk without a limp, but the pain drove me crazy at times. Finally after seeing a sports medicine doctor who referred me to an orthopedic surgeon (who specializes in ankle & foot problems) who did an MRI the problem was found. I had 2 torn ligaments and a 3rd was a pulled ligament. And here I was thinking that everything was fine just pain at times. I even had a physical therapist that was talking to me as if I were faking the injury the whole time. When I went back to physical therapy after surgery, she told me "well at least you can prove now that you are telling the truth." Crazy. Trust me, it sounds just like a ligament problem. But go to either a podiatrist or an ortho who specializes in foot and ankle problems. Sometimes you may just need physical therapy or something else that isn't as drastic as surgery.
I'm now about 4 1/2 weeks from my 2nd surgery (the first one didn't take). I've been on crutches this whole time, but tomarrow I get a new cast and can get rid of the crutches. I'm so thrilled!! I've haven't been able to work because my office is upstairs and we don't have an elevator. But I'm going to work right after I get this cast off and get a walking cast!! I have a green cast on now (bright). I think, just to bug my 13 year old daughter, I'm going for the flourescent pink tomarrow!
Good luck to you and let us know how it goes. This is a great board to let go and vent or just ask questions. I've had a lot of people help me this last time when I was so worried about having surgeryan they were great!Karen

You have just about the same history as I did. I finally went to see an ankle specialist. I am now about four months post-op from a Chrisman Snook ankle ligament reconstruction surgery after already having two previous arthroscopic surgeries on this ankle. You really need to see a specialist and have them do stress x-rays and all the tests for instability. Just keep us updated. Good luck.

P.S.-- what state do you live in?
