Unhappy Help - right foot/ankle very painful!

ok here goes -(forgive me if this sounds the same as other postings, i have a feeling i know what this is , but i would like some advice/input!)
-a year ago i sprained both ankles, than in april i fell and broke my left foot. now all healed, about 2 weeks ago i started having pain in my right foot when i would kneel down and go to stand back up, or stand and walk after sitting briefly. Pain- increasingly worse, started in my ankle (right) outside and radiates across top of foot to inside arch. it hurts to bear weight and when i try to extend foot to step/walk, MAN BIG TIME PAIN! muscles feel real tight like charlie horse/cramp- very hard to point toes, my foot gets stiff and big toe points up . when i walk , my foot stays flat, not intentional-and i almost have to drag my foot , it points inwards now ! but if i try to relax my foot- it hurts.(i have a very high pain threshhold- so we are talking very painful!)also- now calf and outside of right leg sore , either from muscles cramping or from walking different- yeah! shinsplints are now part of the package too !
ibuprofen helps- i have tried inserts in my work shoes with arch support-not much help! i did go for a followup for left foot fx a week ago and foot doc told me it "could be" plantar facitis(sp?)-gave me a shot in arch to calm down muscles/tendons in arch-( i thought maybe he was right and the shot would help- NOT! excerises he gave me only agravate my foot. i told him that was not the problem- he said that plantar facitis can cause those symptoms- great - but my heel does not hurt and i don't have the other symptoms - i go for a follow up for that visit in a week- if i last that long!
i am very sorry for running on - please forgive me- i'm just hoping to speak to someone or hear from some one to see what you all think!
    thanks for listening!

That seems to be one of the hot topics these days. I have met three people in the last week who went in with painful ankles, ended up in an ankle brace, then a cast, the surgery. Always get a second opinion.

Re: Help - right foot/ankle very painful!

I had ankle instability, and because the other tendons and muscles were compensating for it, I had horrible shin splints, swelling, and other good stuff. My Dr. initially thought I had ruptured one tendon, but an MRI showed it was a different one. I wore a brace for awhile, but face it, it cramped my style, so I had a Brostrom Repair a year ago.

If you feel confident with your current Dr., go back and request an MRI. If your Dr. is not a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) or has done a lot of ankle surgery, I would stongly recommend you either find a podiatrist who is and has done lot of ankles or an OS who specializes in feet and ankles.

I hope things get better for you. Take care. -eko

    hi-
thank you both for your response. it's nice to hear from someone!
here's the funny thing- i forgot to mention before that i don't have any swelling in my foot and my ankle isn't hot (arthritis)- it just hurts, inside and when i stand up to walk. today i almost fell twice because i went to step with my right foot, but between pain and, what feels like my ankle will give out i had to stutterstep- which hurts more than just stepping! this is rather frustrating. since the birth of our daughter (2000) i have had more health problems... (i think my husband is getting sick of hearing about them.) i'm only 34 and somdays i feel so much older-
    thanks again for listening!

It's funny that you mentioned having health problems after the birth of your daughter, before I had kids I never was hospitalized or had any problems. Since kids I have had five surgeries (2 were c-sections) and two hospitaliztions.

Also I have another thought, if you are going to stick w/ your current DPM, you might to call to see if you can have an MRI prior to your appointment to that maybe you can discuss the results at your appointment. Also if surgery is mentioned, just take a step back, the the name of the procedure, etc and do your homework, then come back to your Dr. with questions. Be your own advocate. You may even want to get a second opinion.

Let us know how thngs go. -eko

Re: Help - right foot/ankle very painful!

I know how it is to always have ankle pain. After breaking my leg a year ago, my ankle hurts a lot. My doctor kept on telling me that it is normal for the ankle to hurt after breaking a leg, but it has not gotten better in a year. I finally went back with MRI and CT results that I got from another doctor (second opinion) and my doctor is now saying that I might want to go in for surgery. It seems that my ankle likes to give out ant twist a lot. He is sending me to another doctor that he works with. The other doctor is an ankle specialist. He did mention that my ligaments are loose and the other doctor that was there at the appointment said that I could have a torn ligament. The MRI could not show because the plate that is in. Right now I have to wear an ankle brace all the time and I hate it, but I know that I will hurt my ankle worst if I do not wear it. You should make sure that you push to get an MRI, because the longer you wait, you might be hurting your ankle worst.

EKO, are you glad that you got the surgery? I think that if I have to have surgery, it will be the same. How was your recovery? Did you do anything else to treat your ankle before the surgery? My doctor did mention that I could be put in a cast and see if they tighten on their own. Right now I am waiting to see what the specialist says.

I tried a hard brace and just couldn't stand wearing it anymore, it restricted my choice of shoes and I just did not like the way it looked, besides it wasn't a permanent solution.

I am glad I had the surgery. My recovery is a little complicated in that at the same time I had my Brostrom Repair, I also had my bunion corrected. Anyway, I ended up having a pulmonary embolism about 2.5 weeks after surgery, so I was on blood thinners when they found out my toe that had the bunion surgery had dislocated. Anyway, I had to wait six months before I could have my dislocated toe fixed, so I wasn't totoaly up and funtional on my repaired ankle. It has been a year and my ankle it great and I am sure it would have been great earlier without all that other stuff occuring.

You mentioned that they might put you in a cast to see if things tighten up. I'd ask what the odds of that really are. I have not heard any success stories of that working.

Well, I wish you the best and if there is anything else I can answer for you , let me know. -eko

Re: Help - right foot/ankle very painful!

I tried the cast to tighten things up and it didn't do anything at all. Didn't help the pain, and nothing tightened. If anything, things got worse because the muscles got weaker and weren't able to compensate for the ligaments.

I had the Brostrom with Evans (tendon transplant) in March. I am definitely glad that I had it. I can now walk without staring at the ground for any tiny crack that I might trip over and fall. I had no complications from surgery, and am back to all of my regular activities now.

    Good luck.
