Post bunion pain?..and other feet questions

My first question is this. Last summer after spending a weekend outdoors doing various things my feet really began to ache. It was the big toe area...the area of a bunion. While we were driving home it felt like major cramping. Then for weeks to come I had problems. I'd get up in the middle of the night with my baby and barely be able to walk because of the pain. Once I was up and then walked my pain continued throughout the night. I finally went to a foot dr. who took xrays and said it was bunions. That because my big toes turn inward slightly that it was that that was causing the pain. The xrays didn't show huge bunion growths (whatever that is called...from the friction)...just very slight on both feet. All he said was I was too young for surgery and it wouldn't be advisable because I have young children. He sent me off saying take ibuprofen and buy wide shoes. Well, I still have problems. In the last 3 mths I've started working out more. I tried running but my feet hurt too much to do that...and then I get those pains at night if I do. So, I go for fast walks...but even then I'm in pain a lot. I'm trying to figure out what shoes work best for me. I did go out and buy a pair of New Balance wide shoes. But they still cause pain when I walk a lot. Now occassionally I will wake in the middle of the night to that painful bunion....which almost feels like it's cramping but I can move my big toe. Is this common for bunion problems. Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain? The other day I even went to a place that sells those shoe arch inserts that claim to help all sorts of ailments...from bunions to low back pain (which I have a lot of). Anyway, I couldn't see paying the $500 for them. There was no guarentee. Has anyone tried them. I did notice a difference in the pressure on my back and toe area. It really felt like they may help...but I was skeptical. Any ideas.

    Hello Carol and Princess

I 100% agree with Princess on getting a second opinion. I'm 29 years old and have had mild bunions all my life. I had them removed on 1/6/03 and 2/28/03 and I'm very happy with the results. I understand every doctor is different in recommending when to have surgery but just the other day I met a 17 year old girl who just had the surgery. You should definitely get a second opinion so you can have some relief.
    Good Luck
