Dear kittyon,
You have exactly the same thing that i had, hallux rigidus stage 4, completely frozen joint. I am sorry, it is really painful! I had the fusion done, as I was told that the implant would most likely wear out in a couple of years and need additional surgery, and the other procedure you mentioned just cleans out the joint, and as I understand it would do nothing to stop the pain due to the arthritis and lack of cartlidge left in the joint. Good luck, and I hope it all goes well for you too. I too am very active, and am back playing a lot of tennis, pain free.
Best,
Sue

Re: Hallux Limitus

Hi- i was wondering if TriGeek had had his surgery and if he was running again. i went for a second opinion today and this pod was very against running in general - that i would never really be able to run again and ultimately the left one might become damaged as well. im pretty young (33)and dont want to give up running forever! Just looking for feedback. thanks!

Re: Hallux Limitus

I will give you my opinion based on my own eperience. Podiatrists want to get you to where THEY want you to be. Sports med docs want to get you to where YOU want to be. That is a very important difference. If I had listened to my pod, I would not be running today. Fortunately, my sports med ortho was all for getting me back running as soon as possible. That was 6 years ago and I;m still running, still wearing heels (though no stilettos), still dancing.

Re: Hallux Limitus

what kind of surgery did you end up having? was it a really long recovery time? my other pod told me that i would be running in 3 months- thats why i was so shocked today when the second opinion told me that i would have to give it up. thanks for the response- def made me feel better!

Re: Hallux Limitus

I had a cheilectomy with osteotomy. The same thing Shaquille O'Neal had in 2002. He's still running and so am I. He was back playing basketball in about 10 weeks or so (if memory serves). I wasn't running that soon due to other issues but was dancing at 4 weeks (wore my Merrell mules and put duct tape on the bottom so I could slide on the dance floor!). Wore dress shoes at about 8 weeks. So I don't see why you couldn't do a slow jog at 3 months. That's very reasonable.

I don't know where you are but I will give you my standard advice. If you are in or near a city with a pro football or basketball team, call their front office and ask who they use for "turf toe." If you are near a major college athletic program, call their athletic department and ask the same question. That's who you want to see.
