    cast a peroneal tendon tear?

My doctor said its a slight scratched tear and I should have surgery. Then she said she wants to have a cast on it for 2 weeks. I've never heard of a tendon fusing itself - isn't surgery the only option?

I tore the peroneal brevis tendon 6 inches and had to have it surgically repaired. My doc, foot/ankle specialist said that small tears can heal themselves sometimes, and lots of times they put you in a walking boot and do pt on it, leaving surgery as the only option. Have you had an MRI or ultrasound done on it to see how bad the tear is? I had xrays, mri and u/s done on mine, plus failed pt before doing surgery.

Thanks for letting me know that. Yes I had an MRI and the surgeon likened the tear to a 'cat scratch'. They told you 6 inches? Ouch. The pain i'm in must be nothing compared to yours! I'm getting a 2nd opinion next week. I'm 10 months out of tarsal tunnel surgery on this ankle so not anxious for another surgery!

I was a bit baffled when my OS put me in a cast after an MRI scan showing two completely town ligaments in my ankle. I couldn't understand how a complete tear would fuse together if they aren't touching. Sure enough, after 3 weeks in a cast, one of the ligaments reattached itself... still ended up getting surgery on two ligaments though.

Wonder how long that cat scratch is?? lol. I personally would try a walking boot, cast, pt, whatever before surgery. It was no walk in the park that is for sure. Yes, the found it was torn that much when they went in to fix it, we were prepared to have to do a tendon graft, which thankfully we did not have to do.

Re: cast a peroneal tendon tear?

I have had two peroneal tendon surgeries. I was in a walking boot for quite awhile and it helps to keep the weight off of the foot and ankle. Mine was not torn, but rather was not sitting in the groove correctly and would come over the ankle bone and that was the cause of my pain. I think they called it subluxing. Good luck, let us know what the second opinion says.

Thanks! Will write after the 2nd opinion next week. The 1st doc wanted to do a permanent 2 week cast, but I don't want to weaken all my muscles if surgery is inevitable. Happy Thanksgiving, at least I can escape kitchen duties!

Splint for 10 days, then a cast for 6 weeks, boot for 2 months, and PT. I'm still doing PT and wearing the boot every so often b/c I have stress fracture on the top of my foot now too. But doc said I might be released to full activity in Jan. So I would say it takes a good 6 months to feel ok on it.

Re: cast a peroneal tendon tear?

Here's what Doc #2 said....'I see NO tendon tear', your ankle is fine...the painful zapping in the ankle is the end of your peroneal nerve, which starts in your back'. He says I 'mis-heard' the last docter when she recommended tendon surgery. Wow. Since my ankle hurts so badly to walk and touch, I have no idea who to believe. I've decided to do PT, wrap it sometimes and see how I do in January. My kid is off school for 3 weeks at Christmas...I'd rather just decide later. If anybody has any thoughts...?

    Viscomi2,
I didn't have a tendon tear either, and they still ended upd doing surgery. I did PT before having the surgery- you could try a lace up brace called an ASO really keeps it tight - it fits into most shoes. Let's us know how you are doing, I know from personal experience that a tendon injury is very frustrating, as they do not heal quickly.

How did you know it was 'subluxing'? Why 2 surgeries? I did get an ASO but have having trouble getting it into shoes. I'll try again tomorrow!

Re: cast a peroneal tendon tear?

    Viscomic2,
You could see the tendon go over the ankle, and it was a little swollen behind the ankle bone, MRI said there was mild edema- happen to both ankles, so a surgery on each ankle. The ASO works well in a lace up shoe.
I am actually using an ASO right now for a problem with my posterior tibial tendon.

No so bad, just comes with the territory, I am on my feet a fair amount Tuesday through Friday. Any luck using the lace up brace?
