Depends on the circumstances, such as whether it will require surgery or not. Either way though, you're looking at 12 weeks non-weight bearing either from the date of injury or the date of surgery. I had to wait 3 weeks after my injury to have my surgery so the swelling could go down enough. I'm not sure how long it could take until you can return to normal activity as I'm not there yet. In the words of my doctor, this is a life changing fracture. There are several of us with this injury on this board under the heading "Fractured Calcaneous 2". Please read that thread and join in our discussions. You should be able to get a lot of good advice there. Good luck.

I had surgery on 8/14/08, am now in cast after receiving five pins for repair of the fractured/shattered heel. I am told by doctor the I am looking at 10 to 12 weeks of Non Weight Bearing, on crutches. Question to anyone who may be farther ahead in the healing process - how long was it necessary to keep the leg elevated? - I am finding the heel feels better if I let the leg down for periods of time but am wondering what the risk is if I don't keep the leg elevated. As long as I don't feel pain or have any swelling should I be reducing the amount of time I keep the leg elevated so I get increased blood flow to heel. It is always elevated while I sleep, but becoming more difficult to elevate as I become more active at work, walking on crutches, etc. Appreciate any comments

    Hi Vic,
Everyone is different as you will see if you go on to the Calcaneus fracture2 thread.I fractured mine 61/2 months ago with 3mm. break but refused surgery. for domestic reasons ( I was on holiday in Australia and my Mother was in respite care in UK waiting for me to come home)I was in cast NWB for 3 months the 6 weeks PWB to tolerance only, now down to 1 crutch but still in pain and limping.
You, just like the rest of us, will think it will never end but it does get better and you will be surprised in a few months how you have coped.Your recovery may be quicker than mine as I am 61 yrs. old

    Good Luck

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

I turned 48 during this fiasco. I had my fall on 18 May, 1st surgery on 11 June. On 4 August, I found out I had a staph infection. Had 2nd surgery on 8 August to remove the plate and 11 screws. I finish my IV antibiotics on 19 September, and hope to begin weight bearing by the end of September or early October. Starting to see a small light at the end of the tunnel. It's a long haul, but you can do it. I know there are people much worse off than I am, and I keep telling myself that this too shall pass. Hang in there!

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

I am post op 15 months after multiple fractures of my calcaneous and still have pain and problems, been in PT and chiropractor all this time and still don't have full range of motion or walk correctly. I believe that I am as good as I am going to get. Everyone is different and I thought I'd be one of the lucky ones. I myself just turned 48 and this injury has changed my life forever. I read you had your plate and screws removed recently. I am looking to have that done myself to see if it will give me any better results. How did they do the procedure and what was your lay up time. Hopefully not another 3 months of non weight bearing. I'd like to know what to expect if you don't mind filling me in. I hope you recover fully. They say it takes approximately 1 1/2 yrs to 2 yrs to really know your out come.

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

    Sheryl,

The only reason I had to have my hardware removed, was due to the staph infection. At the time, I was 8 weeks post-op and hadn't begun any kind of weight bearing. This Friday, it'll be 6 weeks since the removal surgery. When they did the surgery, they had to remove the bone graft they put in. In doing so, there was a small re-fracture of my heel. I was told at the time that it would be 8 weeks before I could begin weight bearing, but believe some of that length was due to my circumstances. I've read were the recovery for normal hardware removal is much shorter. As for the procedure, they went back in through the original incision. Had to lay the flap open and remove all the hardware. The pain was not near as severe as the original surgery. The stitches were in for almost 3 weeks. Hope that helps, and I sure hope you come further in your recovery. Maybe the hardware removal will help that.

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

    Hello Sheryl,
I'm 10 weeks post op had a bone graft, plate & 6 screws, am due to start walking 10/8.
I asked my Dr. what is the worst case senario, he said if I was still in pain 6 months post op he would remove the plate & screws.
He said the procedure is simple compared to the initial surgery, incision not as big & not to complicated.
How soon will you have your hardware removed & what all did they put in.
    I turned 45 6/14 3 days after my injury.
May I ask if your pain & problems increased when you started walking & did you start walking in your 12th week post op full weight bearing?

    Thank you,
    Carole

    Hi,
I fractured my heel 7 months ago, no surgery due to reasons already stated on this site. I thought that I would never improve, even a month ago when I returned to work I was in pain and didn't think I could continue.

Today I actually managed to get to my local pool and exercised and swam for 30 minutes, I am still having to limp without my crutch, but things are getting better all the time and I and my PT are planning to get me walking properly by end of November when I will be going on holiday.
So please keep positive as you will get better.

    Keep on healing heelies

    Pat

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

    Hi All,

I fractured my right heel 10 weeks (7-29-08) ago falling off laddar while painting. It was non-displaced fracture that don't require surgrery. I went to a podiatrist after the hospital visit a week later and he put me on a CAM boot. I had a x-ray 3 weeks ago and the Podiatrist told me it's completely healed and should be able to FWB and lose the crutches and CAM boot. I am 2 weeks into PT but still have minor pain when walking w/ the cane. I had the PT office Dr. took a x-ray last week and the result showing there still might be a small fracture and she wants to compare w/ the old x-ray. I am lost right now since i don't know why there's still a small fracture when the x-ray that was taken before show it's healed. Few people told me i should get a second opionon from an Orthopedic Specialists and re-take another x-ray to confirm. Anyone have any issue similiar to my? What should i do? I am going back to the Dr. later on this afternoon to have her compare the x-ray hopefully it will be good news.

Not sure if others are taking Vitctman C and Calcium w/ Vitcman D, the Doc told me it's good for the bone, also drinking beef soup w/ bones.

    Jay

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

I just broke my calcaneous on August 31 and I stay angry that I did this to myself. I read about the long recovery time so many on this site are having...and it makes me afraid. Before this accident (falling off a ladder) I had made it all these years with no pain in my entire body...all of my blood work always comse by good...all my numbers have always been good and I fall off a ladder and change my life. I am planning to return to work on Oct 27. We shall see.

Re: what is the recovery time for a shattered heel?

the recovery time .. depends I suppose on what you mean by recover ... My accident was in 2001 .. the good news I have surpassed the expectations my PT and DR had given me of 3% movement. The bad news, Im no where near where I was before the accident. My heel still feels like raw nerves along the achilles tendon and I guess it will always be, I cannot stand sheets or anything to lay against it. I am told that I am still very protective of it when I sleep. Do not give up, I walked through the pain once I was able to get off of the crutches (about 9 months) and was determined to not be held down by this injury. It was VERY painful for probably 2 years, and some days if I walked for very long I wouldn't be able to walk without my crutches for a day or two. But eventually it got better, and I could go longer without stopping. Today I can work or walk do whatever for at least 4 hours before the burning starts, then I have another 1-2 hours before I risk losing a day recovering. I only limp when the weather changes .. ha ( mainly cold). Cold weather really seems to give me fits. The arthritis in it slows me more now than the injury. I can go have the bone scraped and fused, but that would give me zero movement, I would say I have close to 75-80% now. Original projection was 3%. I can even move my big toe now, which was impossible until this past summer. Does anyone know of a good shoe (preferably tennis shoe) that supports well with this injury??
