Any help please-2 failed bunion surgeries-now maybe a fusion!!!

Hello, I don't know where to begin. I had my first lapidus bunion surgery in Aug 07. I had a basic lapidus procedure done. Well I guess it was not done right cause I was having crazy pain. I went and got a second opinion and she wanted to do another surgery. Well I was in so much pain, I left her. She was an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon, highly recommended.

Well she lengthened my first metatarsal, shorted by second, did a heel osteotomy, removed one sesamoid bone, did work on the fifth metatarsal, and cut the fascia at my arch. Well with all that being said I am still having pain. I can not walk right, I still feel like I am walking on bone. It is horrible.

So I went and found a third doctor in philadelphia. He is also an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist. First he said the original fusion is not healed and will need to be redone. He also says the other sesamoid needs to come out and a big toe fusion He says I have extensive arthritis in my big toe joint and that is the only way to fix it. But I am really scared, he would not give very good answers to my questions.

I asked him if I would walk normal, he said he can not predict that. I have the fusion of the metarsal joint further back in my foot and now the big toe, he said he doesn't like to do that but he has no choice. And he can not predict how I will walk. That is very scary to me, I want to walk normal. I am only 28,

I asked him is I would be able to wear other shoes besides sneakers, he said he can't predict that. Maybe I will, Maybe I won't. We will have to see. Again very hard for me, I am only 28 and can not possibly wear only sneakers for the rest of my life.

I asked if this would make me pain free, he said it might or it might not. VERY FRUSTRATING.

I asked if I would be able to walk long distances, he said well I don't know. I am a radiation therapist and I am on my feet ALL day long. This is my job, and trust me I need that job.

So he did not give me very good answers. I was wondering if anyone else had a fusion of the big toe after a failed bunion surgery. Also if anyone has both first metatarsal joints fused. Are you able to lead a normal life, can you walk normal, can you wear other shoes besides sneakers, can you wear heels or dress shoes, please any advice you can give would be great.

Any positive or negative experiences would be great I need to prepare myself.

    Thank you.

All I can tell you is that scanning the internet re my hallux rigidus/limitus problem I came across a number of people who had their toe fused. It seems to take a while to heal, but they also seemed to report surprisingly good pain-free results.

it sounds like the second doctor did a lot of surgery procedures all at once. Were all of these necessary (the pinky toe, arch etc)?

I would go get a fourth opinion. Is there a teaching hospital? They would be up to date on the newest procedures.

I am in Toronto Canada. I had lapidus with very good results. I could give you my doctor name if you are in Ontario.

You are young. Do not settle for "i can't predict that" The first goal of the operation should be to improve your situation.

I am 30 so I understand you want to be active etc.

Hello summerluvr-I am not sure if all the procedures were necessary anymore. At the time she made it sound good, but I am not so sure anymore. I am not sure of anything anymore. I think I made the wrong decision in doing any of this in the first place, but I can't go back in time. I just to make this okay for me now. If you could please give the name of your doctor, I don't think I will be in your area anytime soon, but I would like to know is name so I can look him up. I guess you never know. Thank you so much for your response.

So I scheduled another appointment an orthopedic surgeon in baltimore now. I am going to change directions and see what they have to say. Does anyone have a good questions I should ask them. Or someone please share a good fusion story.

    Thanks.
