Thumbs up Ditching the crutches soon!

I am 10 weeks post op from a big toe fusion and also had a bone graft from the hip. Doc wanted me nwb for 12 weeks total so i'v got 2 more to go. I will then be in a walking boot for 4 weeks.

I'm expecting the worst but hoping for the best when it comes time to put weight on this little puppy. You veterans out there, could you shed some light on how difficult OR amazingly easy it was to get back on 2 feet?

Doc says after 4 weeks in the walking boot i'll be good to go in a real shoe! WHAT! Sometimes i think doctors make it sound so cut and dry.

Any advise from you experts?

Re: Ditching the crutches soon!

I don't have the same issues that you have...but I been unable to walk for the past 5 months (I had a 3-week stint B4 my surgery where I was kinda able to walk SLOWLY for about 45 steps with A LOT OF PAIN...whew wee!!!) SO...for me...ditching the crutches is NOT easy...I'm still in the process of it as I'm almost 4 weeks post surgery. I can take about 8 consecutive steps without crutches (and I do that intermittenly throughout the day). I can take about 35 consecutive steps with one crutch and I do the same protocol as above with that one. I've been in PT one week and I've made a TON of progress...but it isn't easy. I see my PT twice a week and I do my exercises 3-t times a day. My entire left side (surgery side..) ankle, knee, hip...all need to be retrained, which isn't an easy task...but I'm getting there and my PT is really awesome.

Everyone is different...but there are so many muscles in the foot, ankle, lower leg that all work together to put the "walking package" together. You'll have to work at the little stuff and I'd recommend being very disciplined with whatever PT exercises you are given! I know that for me I didn't think I'd ever get to just stading normal on my the beginning my left side was so guarded that the weight went from my heel right up to my hip...nothing in the middle was really activated...but after PT and a lot of work on my part...I can now stand normally. (So...I'm saying this b/c it's easy to freak out when you start out b/c it just won't really work normally and it's easy to think that you'll NEVER get there...but with work and dedication you will....that has been my experience anyway).

Well, I hope this helps! CONGRATS to you in getting to your next step of recovery! I bet it feels really good for you!!!!!!!!!!
