    Bunion vs Flat Foot surgery

My 19-yr old daughter is so torn. She has a bunion but was told she also has flat feet. The podiatrist says she should get the flat foot surgery because that's the cause of the bunion. I asked if she could just do the bunion but he says it's inevitable it will just come back. The difference in the procedures seems huge. The cost is almost the same. Anyone had both or did just the bunion when the whole surgery was recommended. Seems the surgery for the flat foot is SO intense, painful and much longer recovery. I'm just not sure if she could just do the bunion and take her chances for another surgery down the road. HELP?!

Has she been diagnosed with PTTD? If so, then the condition is progressive and she may as well have the surgery before the deformity becomes too severe and more damage is done. But, the surgery is major, and you are right to question the necessity of it. Has she been evaluated by a Foot and Ankle orthopaedic surgeon? If not, I would suggest you start there. If she has, then a second opinion may be in order.

I don't know of anyone who regularly posts on here that has had PTTD surgery and has also had a bunion. If so, hopefully they will post and share their experience. I would tread with caution, as it sounds like you are. I've been accused of being a "chopper mom" (you know, hovering ) myself, and that's not all bad!

Re: Bunion vs Flat Foot surgery

More info - talking MBA Implant and the bunion. All of this is totally unknown to me and, obviously, i'm concerned about my daughter going through the operation, pain, long recovery, etc. Is it all worth it? Her foot hurts all the time however and she was told it won't get better. It can FEEL better with the help of ice, anti-inflammatories, the right shoes, etc. but could still face surgery in the future. Sigh ... She doesn't want it but at the same time feels that if it's "inevitable", the time is probably good now since she has a good job where they will accomodate her, no boyfriend right now, still living home, etc. BUT she has LOUSY insurance so that's an obstacle as well. I haven't slept well lately with all this in my head - lol!

Re: Bunion vs Flat Foot surgery

oh forgot - yes she is seeing a Foot and Ankle Specialist, DPM... our 2nd opinion. First one was a year ago before the bunion was as noticable. Just went 'coz her foot was always aching. He never mentioned flat feet, bunion - just told her she needed to wear better shoes, and that was after x-rays. Plus he seemed like we were wasting his time. So after a year of trying to wear better shoes and it still hurting her all the time, worse after long shifts at work, and noticing that bump getting bigger on the side of her foot, we decided to try someone else.

No, she's talking about an Orthopedic Foot and Ankle surgeon (MD) not a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). Please do seek out an orthopedic surgeon - fellow of foot & ankle society - for a 2nd opinion.
