| triple arthrodesis and ankle replacement
Hello All,
I hate to complain, but i need some advice, comments etc from someone who has been through this. It is almost a year to the day since i had triple arthrodesis done on midfoot, hindfoot due to arthritis and clubfoot. The foot never really stopped hurting, but the doc told me it was normal. I haven't been back to see him for about 6 months. the pain in my ankle was getting unbearable, the swelling has been worse then ever and then i started getting a rash on the foot. Finally made an appointment to go back and see him, He tells me that my ankle is trashed, totally gone. He gave me celebrex and sent me to have a brace made (hard plastic) and said it might buy me a year before i need an ankle replacement of fusion. I am so upset, angry and all the words you can think of! I just can't believe that i went through the triple only to have the pain come back in less then a year. Okay, now that i am done complaining, has anyone else had this happen. i could really use some advice. Thank you all for listening, and thanks for any help you can send my way!!! |

I still have pain but I have a lot of other foot issues as well. Sounds like your ankle problem may be a totally separate issues from your foot pain ? I would ask if the foot surgery affected your ankle. Take care.

Patty,
Sorry you are having so much trouble. I had a triple Arthrodesis on Sept. 10th and I am doing well. I think the Doctor has much to do with how well you do. After almost 6 weeks I am still healing and have some discomfort which is expected. It took me four doctors to find this bone and joint surgeon who specializes in the ankle and I just knew she was the ONE. It doesn't sound like your doctor was on top of your medical problems or am I wrong???
Good Luck
Carole

good morning carole,
I am not sure it was the docs fault, i have had many issues with my feet since i was little. The arthrodesis was done on my midfoot and hindfoot. I think it just added more stress to the ankle joint, and the ankle wore out faster because of this. I am now looking for an ankle specialist, am just hoping i can hold out for a little while longer. I have heard that it is possible to wait too long and then they can't replace the joint, the thought of 2 majore surgeries in less then a year has my head spinning a bit. Thank you for your help. Have a good day
Patty

hey thanks for your help ben. you are right the ankle is a different issue, just think the arthrodesis on my hindfoot and midfoot made the ankle deteriate faster than it would have otherwise. I am just dreading the thought of another surgery, and from what I hear, this will be worse then the arthrodesis. Have you heard this also?

Hi Patty,
Sorry to hear about your problems. In 1996, I fractured my ankle and that led to instability problems a few years later. I ended up having my talonavicular and calcaneal-cuboid joints fused in 2002 only to find out that I developed arthritis in another nearby joint. Well, I had that fused and in 2009, broke that same ankle in an accident. I just had my subtalar joint fused as a result of the damage done to my ankle and I know that this will place more stress on my ankle joint. Fusions are great at relieving pain short-term, but they do place extra stress on other joints. I am sorry that you have to be dealing with this and best of luck!
