    Sprained ankles

    Hello Everyone,

I had a 2nd degree ankle sprained 3.5 months ago, so I came here and read about it. I am not posting my problem, but I am just curious about what I have read here in the last week. I see these general things:

Grade 1: no problem, it will be OK in a month or so.
Grade 2: pain, swelling, bruises varies for individuals but most have some problems in later years.
Grade 3: surgery needed and even with surgery, there are other problems in later years.

    My questions:

Is there anybody with grade 2 and 3 were able to live a normal life afterward?

If not, then what happened? With all the techonology, all the funds and all the researchs, is this all we can do for "ankle sprained"?

I heard people with HIV live normal lives a decade or more later, yet ankle sprained is what we can't fix in this day and age?

What do orthopedic specialists, podiatrist, sports injuries specialists do? Are they all that incompetent that they can't find a solution?

I read many stories that sound so bad that I got upset and afraid for myself. I read about how OS did not take it seriously when people tell them about the problems. I can't believe this is happening in our society. Doctors should treat their patients like a mother treating a child when the child is sick. .. so I thought. I guess it's all about money for doctors because if we are in pain, more money for them.

For those of you who suffer with this, you will be in my prayers for a full recovery.

    Re: Sprained ankles

Hiya i damaged my ankle in 1995 - torn ligament - i was told it would heal fine as i was 13. I was given insoles for my shoes and sent on my way, they said they would send for me for physio which they did, then cancelled a few days before, that happened a few times and i never received any physio!!

Now years down the line i am having terrible problems with my foot, i had an operation about 10 weeks ago and its still extremely painful. They dont seem to know what the problem is, you get a different story every time you go to the hospital cause its a different doctor. Ive been off work since mid june as i work in a job where i am on my feet all day, i am getting alot of grief from work and wouldnt be surprised if they dont dismiss me soon. I hate not been able to work but I know i cannot manage my present job and at the moment whilst on statuary sick pay am not able to seek another job.

I hope you never have any problems in later years, i think what made my problem worse is it left my ankle unstable after and over the years i have had many falls. If you ever start feeling pain, grinding, clicking or instability get to the doctors!!

    Take care

    Re: Sprained ankles

I think that sometimes what we find on the internet are about people that have problems with recovery, are looking for answers or venting. The reality is that often when we have a good experience/recovery, we tend to move in and not come to message boards as often as we are feeling good and getting back to life. Don't let everything you read scare you. I know I certianly discuss the problems in a recovery more than the good things that happened.

I have had many, many ankle sprains due to sports and a horrible grade 3 sprain a year ago July as well as torn tendon. While my tendon was a challenge, the sprain/torn ligament healed nicely and I moved on. Any pain I had afterwards were not related to the sprain. I've always gone back to playing competitive ball hockey after various sprains. It's important to be patient, use meds as needed, ice and elevate and as things improve, move into ROM and strength training. It will take time and it's important to challenge and be consistent with your exercises otherwise, you'll never get back to normal.

    Good luck.
