Skin Necrosis After Surgery

Has anyone on here been diagnosed with necrosis of the skin after foot surgery? I had flat foot reconstructive surgery (calcaneal osteotomy, cotton wedge osteotomy, kidner procedure, and gastroc recession) three months ago. I just recently got diagnosed with necrosis along my incision for the cotton osteotomy. I will be having surgery on Thursday for it along with removing the bone staple that may be contributing to my incision not healing.

Today I've noticed that the skin is turning more black around the incision. Luckily, it doesn't seem to be that progressed as on the outside it doesn't look too bad. Hopefully we caught it early enough that it doesn't cause that much damage.

Has anyone here had a similiar experience? If so could you please post as I have no idea on what to expect from this. Thanks!

Re: Skin Necrosis After Surgery

Yes.....I had this. I had it debrided 2 weeks after my initial surgery. 7 months later and I had to have another debridement under general anaesthesia. I'm now left with a large open wound that they're trying to heal with honey. Good luck

Re: Skin Necrosis After Surgery

The area around my cotton osteotomy blistered big time. The doctor warned me that it would take a long time to heal because the skin under the blister was necrotic. In my case, the the top layers of skin would open but the actual incision never opened or oozed. It just took a long time for the area to really heal. At ten months, the are is still very red looking (not infected)

Re: Skin Necrosis After Surgery

roxygirl1 - Did your doctor put in a bone staple to hold the bone graft during the cotton osteotomy? How did they use another fixation device? I'm nervous about removing the bone staple at only three months out as he normally keeps them in until atleast nine to twelve months. I understand that he doesn't want to take the chance of leaving it in there and getting a bad infection but I just don't see the bone graft being healed enough at this point.

Re: Skin Necrosis After Surgery

He used an internal pin which stays in unless it causes a problem. I don't feel it and causes no problems at all so I guess it will just stay in. I did have the calcaneal osteotomy screws removed
