Foot drama

Hi,

If anyone had or has what I am about to explain and can shed ANY light on my ongoing experience, many hugs and kisses are sent out to you. Here my story:

I am a 61-year old black female, I take Amlodipine Besylate 10mg daily for blood pressure (I took this medication starting October 2007 to lower my pressure due to scheduled surgeries in the month of December 2007). The surgeries performed (all on the same day) were on my left foot to:
• remove a bone spur
• straighten a hammer toe (the bone was fused), and
• remove a bunion

August, 2010 surgery – great toe; a pin was inserted.

For about 2 years, I told my doctors about my pain and discomfort. Then I started feeling the itching and burning sensations. I have had the following tests:
• urologist – September, 2008
• neurologist – 2009
• x-rays -second opinion (sought foot specialist) June 2009
• blood work for iron deficiency 2009 & June 2011
• MRI – April, 2010
• ultrasound April-2010
• allergy test for metal (nickel screws are in my foot) – June, 2010
• a test whereby I was stuck with needles along my leg and feet (I don't know the name of this) 2010
• full check-up which included blood test March 2011

Prior to these surgeries, my health was good.

All tests came back negative and yet, the feelings I was and continue to have, are still present.

4-1/2 years have passed; I am still seeing doctors because my condition has worsened.

My symptoms are: deep itching, burning, aching sensations with no relief. All of this is going on in the foot at the same time. It starts from the tip of the toes to my heel and goes no further than the ankle. It is most uncomfortable and painful to walk on the foot. I must keep the foot in motion so I sit a lot, rotating, stretching, massaging it, bouncing, stomping, and tapping the foot. The stretching of the toes and foot, bouncing, stomping, twisting, and tapping the foot is my way of "scratching the itch". I am exhausted because of the constant movement I have to do. What I am living with starts from the time I awake to the time I fall asleep. There have been too many times I had to take Oxycodone-APAP 5-325 MG in order to sleep. (Over the counter pain relievers do nothing to help ease the pain/itch/discomfort.) When I don't take the medication, I get about 4 hours of sleep because the pain, itch, and burn wakes me – then I start all over again – trying to find some relief. There are moments I feel a sudden steady pain that lasts 30 seconds on the large toe. The pain is an intense pain that stiffens my body. It feels like several pins are being stuck into my toe. This can happen at any time, walking, sitting, or lying down. My foot at times feels like it is carrying weight or that I've walked 5 miles. When I walk, I notice that I step down on the side of the foot, dig my heel, and then flatten the foot to take steps. I continue to feel the sensations even in movement. When I stand, I have to rock the foot to keep it in motion. On several occasions, I have tried not doing anything and if I try to rest the foot, the sensations are greater.

June 12, 2011 - unusual happenings occurred from about 5:00 am until about 6:00 am the next morning.

Tingling sensation on the smaller toes and skin was painful to the touch. The tingling feeling traveled just below the bones of my toes.
Aching in entire foot
Burning sensation settled on my skin below the ankle bone – it felt like a circle of fire spinning in that area only
Itching sensation deep inside foot was so intense that stretching the foot could not relieve the itching. My husband had to carefully massage the foot due to the sensitive skin area (toes).

June 13 – the typical sensations were felt, the itching became more intense and as I am typing this e-mail, I am stretching the toes and foot, bouncing, stomping, twisting the foot, and tapping the foot to "scratch the itch".

Very hard to concentrate and live a "normal" life.

Thanks for your response/feedback.

Re: Foot drama

So no one has mentioned removing the hardware?

Don't know what foot doctors you've been seeing but I strongly suggest calling the Eagles or Sixers and finding out who they use.

Re: Foot drama

Dear Ron889,
So sorry to hear about your current problem with your foot. I can't imagine going through something like that. Based on your description, the first thing I thought of was CRPS which my surgeon had warned me about prior to bunion surgery. Eventhough the chances are slim, but it could happen to anyone. I am sure you can read more about it once you google to match your symptoms. I hope you can at least find a good doctor for pain management in the meantime. Take care.
Cheers!
