Help! PTTD, PF and dancer's tendonitis
Hi all ... My first post here and seeking suggestions, support, and maybe some guidance. I have been living with bilateral plantar fasciitis for about 6 years, I could never get it to resolve itself despite rounds of physio, orthotics, exercises, etc. I had resigned myself to living with it. I thought the pain was bad then ... Today I wish it only hurt that much!

Over the last year my pain has been changing and becoming more and more intense. Even the pain while resting was becoming quite unbearable and was keeping me up at night, unable to sleep. Icing, stretching, NSAIDS brought no relief. Finally I visited my new family doc who told me it was nothing more than PF, told me all would be resolved by weight loss (I might add the PF started while I was significantly lighter than I am now) and sent me to a podiatrist for examination and new orthotics. I also did a fairly significant round of physio, including ultrasound and accupuncture.

Initially the podiatrist brushed off my complaints of severe pain but after 3 visits she began noticing more gait issues etc and has diagnosed me with PF (duh), tendonitis of my flexor hallucis longus (dancer's tendonitis) and PTTD, which is what she said is causing my pain. She casted for new orthotics and gave me exercises ... It's been 3 months and while the PF is feeling better, pain in other areas continues to worsen and is now spreading up my legs into my shin and knees. The podiatrist seemed surprised at my insistence my pain is severe and said I needed to go back to my MD as if she couldn't do more for me.

All this is great but my family doctor does not seem to understand how severe the pain is and all he continues to say is to lose weight. I am finding that difficult as I am unable to be on my feet even for short periods of time without some serious pain. I was going to the gym 3+ times a week (with at least an hour of cardio .... I am not a complete obese slob) but I can't bear to anymore. I also coach minor sports and cannot handle it ... It is interfering with my career ... I can't even run errands for more than an hour.

How do I convince my doctor that this is more serious than he thinks? I am only 30 years old, have no obesity-related health issues. I feel bound by the Canadian healthcare system since it's structure leaves me unable to seek out a second opinion on my own (no such thing as calling and making an appointment with another doctor in Ontario) ... I am at my wit's end, I'm depressed, I can't imagine living like this for the next 50 years ...

I'm sorry to hear of your plight. Strange to hear podiatrist gave up. Can you go back to MD or podiatrist with literature in hand from a reputable website about pttd? Most say this is a progressive problem and surgery is often needed. Good luck and ill say a prayer for you.

I am so sorry you have to go through all of this. It sounds like neither of the doctors are taking your problem seriously. Did either of the doctors order x-rays or an MRI? Did they put you in a brace? You need to find a good foot and ankle specialist. From all that I have read and experienced, most cases of PTTD are progressive and will not resolve on their own.
