"Cliff Note" version of a shattered heel...

Hi All!! I was hoping to get some good advice and happy words about my accident that happened while hiking in Big Sur, CA. On March 9th, 2012 I slipped and fell down a 100ft cliff onto the rocks below. It was a long, long, long way down. It resulted in a major concussion,10 staples to my head,a broken arm, fractures in my neck, pelvis, back and both feet. My heel on the left foot is shattered with multiple fragments. I'm waiting for the CT scan to come back on my right foot because it has been popping and giving me a ton of pain. Everything has "heeled" except my feet, THANK GOD!! The first doctor was no help...he told me that he wouldn't do surgery(it was out of his skill set...his words) and that I should wait a year and if I still was in pain then he would want to fuse it. Not what I wanted to hear, at all! I'm currently trying to find a specialist in my area that can give me any help. I do not want to be fused until I absolutely have to...hopefully never. The reason they did not operate earlier is because they could only see one fracture on the x-ray and were waiting for it to heal. The fact that it's been four months and is still very swollen and extremely painful scares me a lot. I feel like I'll never be able to work-out, run or be a soldier again.
I currently serve in the CA National Guard and this life-changing event has put my career and whole life in a tail-spin. If ANYONE can tell me what to look forward to or any options I have, it would be Greatly appreciated! If anyone has a workout that I could do without using my feet(I know that sounds impossible)it would really help my mental clarity. I am so thankful I am alive and God obviously has a new plan for me. Thanks for reading and God Bless!

Hello Freedom,
Sounds like you had a major catastrophe. I am so sorry and wow do you have a real understanding of pain. First, let me welcome you (unfortunately) to the category of "heelie". These are people who have broken their heels. We are a special group. No one really understands us because they think a broken heel is like every other broken bone, but it's not. It takes WAY longer to heal and it's much more painful. You used the word "lifechanging." Well, for many heelies, this injury is lifechanging. They never walk the same again or they may have perpetual pain.

I would strongly suggest you find an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in feet and ankles and have him/her look at both of your feet. I certainly don't know what will come of it but a regular OS is really not going to do you any good; they just don't have the expertise needed. If you are near San Francisco I happen to have heard of one, a Dr. Mann. In Southern Cal, my guy is Dr. Timothy Charlton.

Good luck and God bless you in your journey.
