    Thumbs down RLS failure

I am a 79-year-old male who was very physically active until total ankle replacement surgery about 18 months ago. Since then, RLS has become chronic and debilitating.

I believe the propensity for RLS is hereditary. My father was as severe as I am, and I exhibit the most refractory form. Physicians tried all of the FDA approved medications. Some had no effect at all. Some worked for a short time. Presently, I am down to pain pills in the form of hydrocodone.

I test my need each night, and each night I am able to doze off for a short time. Then, my arms often wake me up. Depending on the severity, I take 5 mg of hydrocodone about 9 p.m. Symptoms usually return, and I take 2.5 mg more. By that time, usually from 12 to 2 a.m., I am able to sleep intermittently.

The next morning I experience a drugged feeling which lasts until about noon. Like any narcotic, my body appears to need more, but I am adamant about limiting myself to 7.5 mg. per day. Being a writer, I no longer have the capacity to create.

I tried many home remedies such as yogurt, pickle juice, cherry juice, and vinegar. None worked, though I did develop a taste for yogurt.

I don't expect a cure to reach me from this august group, but know that we are all in the same boat and must persevere.

    Re: RLS failure

I'm so sorry for your pain! I have had severe RLS for 16 years. Not sure if I'm allowed to say website names on here, but an excellent source of info on RLS is on their website (ends in dot org). It sounds like you've seen a doctor, but I'd seriously recommend someone who specializes in RLS. After years is trial and error, my doc and I found that the only way to control mine was thru 4 different medications: neurontin, trileptal, tizanidine, and cymbalta. She monitors my kidney and liver function and ferritin levels as well. It's a very frustrating disease!

Thanks for responding, and I feel your pain as well.

While I tried several FDA approved meds for RLS under the care of a physician, none worked for any length of time. I have not tried them at the same time. Being 79, my present primary care physician would like to keep my prescribed meds under 10 daily. Most of my meds are for hypertension, but my tired old body runs the gamut for old folks medical problems.

I am not aware of an RLS specialists in the Metroplex though I am sure there must be one. In fact, most physicians I consulted know very little about the dilemma. I bought a book on the subject for my current Primary Care doc.

    Thanks for your input.
