Upcoming Brostrum ? Blood thinners required ... Aprehensive

Hey guys new to thread . I know you've heard it all before but I'm a little apprehensive . Had complete ligament rupture of AtFl and Cfl 18months ago was treated conservatively , moon boot etc 7 weeks off work. Now I've had issues for about 6weeks. Back to the specialist . MRI scan has shown the ATFL has not healed. Specialist has me booked in for surgery in a month. Specialist said they will attempt to stretch the ligament down and pin it to the bone , if there is enough left . If not he will take a piece of ligament or tendon from elsewhere in the ankle and pin it both ends.
Apparently I will have to be cast for 6 weeks then moon boot for 6 weeks then 2 months of physio. And I'll need to go on blood thinners to avoid possibility of blood clots . Any of you guys have to do this? ... I'm a carpenter so I have to get this fixed , having to carry heavy things and twisting and bending a lot etc .
Guess I just need to talk .I didn't handle the 7 weeks the first time very well , mental health wasn't good. Not being able to help my wife round the house drove me bonkers .

Cheers for any help
Jase

Re: Upcoming Brostrum ? Blood thinners required ... Aprehensive

Hi there

I'm 2.5 weeks out from a Brostrom-Evans-Gould. Both of my lateral ligaments were destroyed so I ended up having the tendon transfer as well as the Brostrom procedure. I'm being treated somewhat more liberally, I'm in France.

I was 4 days in hospital, 2 of those of IV pain meds and fluids. After surgery I was in POP, and they cut a window in this to access the wound on day 3. I've had a nurse visit every three days to change the dressing until last Tuesday, when I had the stitches removed and the POP replaced with a closed fibreglass cast. So that's 2 weeks in POP, 2 weeks in a fibreglass cast and then he plans to progress me into a boot, PWB.

I was given anticoagulant injections everyday in hospital and they have been continued and will be until I'm out of the boot. I also get my clotting factors checked once a week. The injections are simple - you can do them yourself. My husband does them for me every evening as he has a clotting disorder and is very familiar with them. I prefer to be anti-coagulated rather than risk a clot. Having seen my husband with several DVTs and twice with life-threathening PEs, I'm happy to get jabbed everyday!

Hope that helps. P

Although my procedures were different I still needed to do anti-coag therapy, too. There are a number of choices, but I went with Aspirin therapy--very effective and inexpensive. I take 325mg Aspirin twice daily.

Good luck with your surgery. I am in Victoria - so not too far away - lol!!!
I was in a surgical splint 10 days then fibreglass cast 2 weeks - had to inject myself every evening for the 3.5 weeks - very easy to do, they showed me in the hospital and the needles are small and have a small coating on the needle part so very easy
