pain relief following calcaneus screw removal

7 months ago, I had PTT surgery, including a calcaneus osteotomy and lengthening of my achilles. My recovery seems to be going well (strength, endurance, range of motion, nearly normal gait, etc.) except for persistent heel pain where the screw was inserted. My surgeon says bone fusion is complete and he'll remove the screw if I wish.

According to him, the procedure is comparatively minimal, healing takes about 2 weeks, and other patients have experienced pain relief. He said I should be able to enjoy my vacation in . September, which will involve a fair amount of periodic walking on paved paths (1/2 hour max each time, 3 miles or so in total daily for a week). I can already handle a couple hours on hard surfaces if I put up with heel pain.

Have other folks on the board who had similar issues and had the screw removed experienced significant and lasting pain relief? Can you walk without heel discomfort?

I can't speak specifically to your heal issue, but I had a plate and screws removed from my wrist about 7 months after my ulnar osteotomy and it did heal up quite quickly. The pain I had from the plate that had come loose was gone.

    Good luck with your surgery.
