    Angry Avulsion Fracture/Torn Ligaments

So I rolled my ankle 5 months ago and went to hospital and was xrayed but was told it was nothing and sent home. I went back in a month later unable to still walk and was told the original xray showed an avulsion fracture in my ankle and the Dr just didn't tell me. I was referred for physio and have done physio for 2 months but the exercises seem to exacerbate my ankle.

I finally decided to return to the fracture clinic after having an ultrasound that apparently showed more bone fragments and a previous ATFL tear. At this stage it was 4ish months after my injury and the pain had just gotten a lot worse literally being unable to walk at times due to pain.

They sent me for an MRI which showed I have torn 3 different ligaments the deltoid, the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular with joint effusion and fluid in the tibialis tendon (?) I saw a specialist today who said they usually wait 6 months but we were pretty much there already (now been 5 months) but said to wait another 2 months (!!) with no suggestions on how to manage it other then "don't roll your ankle again" and if it's not improved I'll need surgery.

He sent me for a cortisone injection tomorrow so I'll see how that goes. I just hate that I have to wait so long for anything to happen it's been 5 months and I've had no boot or cast or any non-weight-bearing time. Has anyone had similar injuries? I don't know what to expect and I'm annoyed that the original Dr didn't tell me about the injury.

    Re: Avulsion Fracture/Torn Ligaments

I had same lax kind of treatment with first podiatrist although a bit better than you since they atleast saw fracture. I was booted and not weight bearing at first. I don't understand why he held me up for months and then said go into a shoe and try and rehab and live with it or get surgery. I failed manual manipulation tests and my peroneal tendon would sublex and my foot was so loose they could misalign it by hand with audible pops in the room.

There is no way that was going to heal on its own, my foot was so unstable and loose I could barely hobble on flat ground with a brace to get around. Stairs and all sorts of things were a safety hazard. Then we had the pain.

I followed up with sports ortho that works on foot/ankle and had surgery april 26th and although I am not perfect I am very active and just took up jogging.

Sounds like you got terrible care and advice. Its definately best since you know your body to get in the doctors face and speak up. You should have probably atleast been booted to rest to give you chance, and now you possibly caused all sorts of extra damage.

If this were just a mild injury you would have rested for a period of time, then rehabbed and started to slowly improve.

Just like me if you have problems with basic function and giving way/instability I think you are in trouble if you don't start to improve within weeks. And for those that live athletic lives/jobs like me, it can bring your life to a depressing halt.
