Popping Sound While Walking After Sprain

    Hello everyone!

I haven't posted on here in about 4-5 years due to a lack of injuries, but we all knew the day would come where I would once again hurt one of my ankles.

Anyway, I have had chronic foot and ankle problems for years now. I've had multiple sprains and fractures and once had arthroscopic surgery (2010) to help alleviate some of my chronic pain (all on my left foot, by the way). I also have extremely tight Achilles tendons so I also have problems with my right ankle every once in a while.

The other night, I was walking down the street when out of nowhere my right ankle just gave out and rolled right out from under me. I ended up falling with all my weight on it and I heard the all too familiar snapping sound and felt the immediate pain and swelling. I was on my way to a concert I was performing in so I had to get up and walk away. It hurt a lot, but I ended up spending the rest of the night on my feet. By the end of the night it was extremely bruised and swollen, but it was a lot better the next morning. Today, however, I was walking and heard a popping sound and a short, sharp pain. What does this mean? The last time this happened, I ended up having to get surgery. Is this going to require surgery?

I have been taking care of it myself and I am posting here because I am away at college right now. We have health services but they don't really do anything helpful, so I'm trying to stay away from them. Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks,
    TheFrosh3

Hi. That sound could be the sound of a talar dome injury. I thought I had sprain mine when I fell off a ladder and rolled my ankle . 8 weeks later of pain and that snapping sound a cat scan showed a hole in the talar dome. This problem is commonly mis diagnosed as a sprain and can not be detected in an X-ray. I was lucky to go to a foot specialist, whom immediately recognized the snapping sound and knew what test to run. The bad news is, I have had failed bone grafts and now an ankle fusion in an attempt to fix mine. Some canbe healed by casts and rest though , depending on the injury. Good luck, and I hope it's just a sprain!

I have had popping with a bad sprain when there were swollen ligaments/tendons rubbing on each other or on bone. If it is more of a clicking sound and comes from the lateral side around the malleoulus then it could be a peroneal tear or injury. At a minimum you probably need xrays and some time off it but if the noise continues you need to see a foot/ankle orthopedist for a real diagnosis. Sorry, I know that is hard when you are a student.
