Smile Anyone know much about pregnancy after gallbladder surgery??

    Hey everyone

I am not new to gallbladder pain (had attacks off and on for ten years before I figured out what they were - yes I did, not the docs - and then finally got sent for an ultrasound). I was then sent to the fourth G.I specialist, who said it should come out. Fine. Same week, I discover I am unexpectedly ... well, expecting! We weren't trying, but I guess someone decided his time was now not later.

(and for those who are wondering, I would go through childbirth any time rather than another really bad attack...they're not always bad, but when they are...oh man...)

Of course, surgery postponed. Since then been postponed three times (baby didn't sleep first year due to a medical condition, so i was utterly exhausted, then he wasn't weaning well, then it got cancelled by hospital). Was supposed to have it done this fall, but then I started wondering :

What IF I am the 5 - 20% that gets the chronic diarrhea? I am definitely planning at least one more baby. The drugs that are used to control this are in a category C, meaning the might pose a risk to a fetus. Grreeaat. Sure, I might sail through it afterwards, but what if not??? Then I risk exposing my unborn child, or go through nine months (and probably more) of no drugs but chronic running - for - the - toilet diarrhea?

Since I had the baby espec, the attacks have lessened (which I hear is unusual). But then, I am twenty pounds lighter than I was pre - baby... so maybe that's it? Cuz I can eat what I couldn't before (fatty foods) without getting an attack or even bothered (MOST of the time). I am not brave enough to try eggs though. They were always HORRIBLE for me.

So I am thinking - since I am not as bothered, I might just try getting pregnant again right away and then consider surgery (or one more baby, dunno). HUbby thinks I am a little nuts, because before I was really really bothered by them. BUT if something happened, and it really made it difficult to have another, I would be devestated. Utterly devestated.

Any thoughts from anyone?? Am I nuts? I figure, I lived with it this long, what's another couple years (especially if it stays like this, and if not, I can book the darn surgery - but I can't take it back AFTER the surgery, you know??)

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.....

If I were you I wouldn't get pregnant again until you have a clean bill of health. If that means having your GB removed, so be it. You will be better off in the long run. Also, I speak from experience. I was scheduled to have surgery to remove cancer cells from my cervic and surprisingly I got pregnant. I delayed the surgery, and ended up loosing my baby in my seventh month due to my illness. Really it's not worth the risk. Besides, if left untreated, GB probems can become VERY serious. You could end up jaundiced or worse.

    Thanks for your thoughts....

Thing is, I haven't felt better like this in a long time. It's not 100% better, but I can eat things I haven't eaten in a long time. I haven't had an actual attack in at least 7 months, I do sometimes still get the runs if I have cream in my coffee etc. But that's about it.

I understand what you are saying about the risk to a baby, but unless a gallbladder problem becomes very severe it isn't a risk to the babe. In fact, that's why they cancelled my surgery the first time - I was doing okay enough and it was a risk to the baby to have the surgery.

I am afraid of getting the surgery and then having difficulties. If I was not feeling well, that would be a different story. I also eat well now and did during the last pregnancy and plan to for any subsequent pregnancies, and that helps a lot too.

I will be talking to my doctor as well.
I just wanted to see if anyone else had ever been in the same situation with gallbladder stuff....
