Normal tests, nausea, bad gallbladder my story

I have followed this forum for the last 6 months as my doctors tried to figure out what was wrong with me. Now that I have had my gallbladder out I wanted to share my story as I have noticed many times all the tests come back normal but the gallbladder is still the problem.

I had constant severe nausea that started 7 months ago. Sometimes upper right quadrant pain with severe belching and burping. That was it, no other symptoms. I had mild stomach inflammation and normal biopsy results. I had a normal ultrasound with no stones. I had a Hidda scan done that was 38(technically normal as 35 is the cut off). CT scan normal. All blood tests normal. The surgeon was not convinced it was my gallbladder and was not going to do surgery until he did the physical exam. He had me take a deep breath and pushed lightly on the right side of my stomach. I almost jumped off the table. Surgery was scheduled for 5 days later. My gallbladder was not the right color, inflamed, thickened walls and had a small benign tumor. My nausea immediately went away and I have not had any more pain.

The point of the story....the tests they do for gallbladder problems don't mean anything! You can have normal tests and still have a bad gallbladder. Good luck everyone, your stories have been inspiring and kept me pushing forward even after the first surgeon told me it was not my gallbladder.

Thank you so much for posting this, I'm super convinced my gallbladder is the problem but doctors won't seriously consider it because I'm "too young" for GB issues. All of my tests have been normal too and it's driving me crazy! I guess I can look for a doctor that will take it out regardless. I'm nauseas every day and also belch nonstop and have heartburn daily. Sounds like GB to me haha

I had the same experience. I had all the classic pains before removal and they did several tests, including the HIDA scan and all of then came back normal so we figured it was something else. A few months later I had some pasta and was in sooo much pain afterwards. My doctor told me to try drinking some heavy whipping cream because it is so rich that if my gallbladder was having issues there was definitely something wrong. I had two or three sips and spent the next three days in pain. I called the doctor and had my gallbladder taken out the next week. I've been "fine" ever since

    I was 14 when I had my gallbladder removed. I'm 19 now.
All my tests came back normal too. Seriously try drinking heavy whipping cream and see how it treats you, definite worked for me.

I second what Amira said. Thanks for posting this. I am surprised your doctor didn't want to take it out when your HIDA came back at 38%. Did you have the CCK injection?

As for Amira, I am in a situation that is very similar to yours. There are several other people (and probably a lot more I don't know about) that have similar stories. I want to start a thread and gather up a couple of these stories and hopefully have it made into a sticky. I think it would help people out a lot.

I agree, I think that would be very helpful. I've spent days on end searching for stories like ours and it's very hard to find.

I had to do a lot of searching as well. If we gathered the information and had actual stories it would end up saving people a lot of time and hassle. Also, with all of the stories it would help prove it's legitimacy so people would trust the information.

I had two specialists and a surgeon assure me that my gallbladder was fine even though I was in constant pain. Finally I had a HIDA scan, and the ejection fraction was 8, so a different surgeon finally removed it. Sometimes I think, they just like billing the multitude of tests to your insurance company.

I don't have a lot of pain, but I just burp like crazy.....it's maddening. I'm going to be getting surgery soon, thanks for posting this doctors are great but they still can't put themselves in their patients shoes. If they didn't find a stone I probably still wouldn't know my gallbladder was in need of removal.

That's good that you kept pushing for answers even after the doctors' told you that it wasn't your gall bladder. If someone is having issues I don't understand why they wouldn't run an ultrasound and a HIDA scan. It seems like they like to guess.

Glad to hear you are getting the treatment you need. Hopefully it solves your problem. When are you getting the surgery? Keep us updated and good luck.

Re: Normal tests, nausea, bad gallbladder my story

    Hi all,
I'm very glad to have found others experiencing what I am. I had one actual attack about 5 years ago. I thought I was having a heart attack and then realized what it probably was. I've had no "attacks" since. I do occasionally have a dull persistent achy pain around my gallbladder and it even hurts in my right arm. I did have a HIDA scan and I was within normal range, tho barely. I also had an ultrasound which showed nothing. I saw a surgeon and he was willing to remove it, but nobody would definitely say that it needed it. I wasn't sure because my problems, except the one attack, didn't fit what everyone says about their gallbladder.

This week I had two pretty greasy breakfasts and now I'm on the couch with that ache. Also, I sometimes ache there when I'm tired or cold. Has anyone experienced anything like that? Anyway, I'm glad to find confirmation that it might be my gallbladder after all.

That ache is an attack as well. I'd get tested regularly, if I were you. It can rupture, like an appendix, and that's potentially fatal.

    Hello,

I'm having my gallbladder taken out on Friday this week. My symptoms seem pretty similar to yours. I eat something greasy, it hurts for about 4 hours afterward. When I'm cold and shivering it hurts more, same if I get tired.

When I had my HIDA Scan done it was ~15% so, that is a difference. I think that right now the HIDA Scan is the most reliable test to tell if you need the GB out or not. My surgeon says that if you have the HIDA Scan with CCK and your GB hurts like hell when they inject the CCK then it's almost always a good idea to remove the GB.

I know when I had my HIDA Scan done and they injected the CCK my GB hurt so bad I almost puked.
