    Question Surgery Question

I recently had a discectomy and 3-4 days post-op started experiencing fever, shortness of breath, dizziness, heavy breathing, racing heart and feeling like I was going to pass out. The mornings were especially difficult and I would find myself panting like I had run a marathon. By the early afternoon I would be feeling some better but had a hard time really catching my breathe. After 4 days of feeling like this and chasing the fever, I contacted the doctor. After going through my symptoms he asked how I was doing with the spirometer. I didnít know what that was - he explained it to me, and I told him I didnít have one and never blew into anything after surgery before they sent me home. He explained some deep breathing exercises I needed to start doing immediately and also explained what happens in the lungs with anesthesia, and that my symptoms seem to be related to this. First, how common is it that this would overlooked following surgery, and second, do I need to be concerned with my lung health due to this oversight?
