    Question Xanax and grapefruit

Does anyone know why you shouldn't eat grapefruits while you are taking Xanax? My doctor prescribed Xanax for me and it says that you should not eat grapefruit while taking this medication. I love grapefruits! What does it do?

Hi, this is from the CaroMount Health site:

Medications in the benzodiazepine family exert calming and sedative effects and are used to treat anxiety and insomnia. Benzodiazepines are also used as muscle relaxants and anticonvulsants. They work by increasing the effects of the neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger) GABA. Benzodiazepine drugs include

    alprazolam (Xanax)
chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride (Libritabs, Librium, Limbitrol, Lipoxide, Mitran, Reposans-10, Sereen)
    clonazepam (Klonopin)
    clorazepate dipotassium (Gen-XENE, Tranxene-T, Tranxene-SD)
    diazepam (Diastat, Valium, Valrelease, Vazepam)
    estazolam (ProSom)
    flurazepam hydrochloride (Dalmane, Durapam)
    halazepam (Paxipam)
    lorazepam (Ativan)
    oxazepam (Serax)
    quazepam (Doral)
    temazepam (Razepam, Restoril, Temaz)
    triazolam (Halcion)
    and others

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Grapefruit Juice

    Possible Harmful Interaction

Grapefruit juice slows the body's normal breakdown of several drugs, including some benzodiazepines, allowing them to build up to potentially dangerous levels in the blood.1 A recent study indicates this effect can last for 3 days or more following the last glass of juice.2

Because of this risk, if you take benzodiazepines, the safest approach is to avoid grapefruit juice altogether.

    Ughh,

    no more grapefruit, what next?

For example, I hear green tea shouldn't be drunk when taking Xanax?

Are these drugs worth it?? So many side effects, so many contra-indications??

You made me laugh. I have taken xanax for quite some time. I have drank grapefruit juice, and green tea....not knowing about these precautions. I don't drink the grapefruit now, cause they wrote it on the bottle. But there was a time no one knew this! Atleast it was written up this way.

As far as the contra-indictions...well, a friend put it so wisely. She took her ativan, especially on a trip to Italy. She said to me, if there was a bottle of ativan and her husband next to it...., and she was having a bad panic attack, what would she choose? The ativan. It is true, the drugs can be life savers..when your condition is really acting up! For that I say thank god for these drugs!
    just my opinion,
