    Question Iron Count too High

My iron count is too high at 186. I'm a 50 year old male. I've been eating quite a bit of red meat over the last 6 months. Could that have anything to do with it? Could I alter my diet to bring my iron count down to normal?

It may be contributing to it, also there is a condition called hemochromatosis, that is iron overload, has your doctor checked for this condition? Many who have this condition give blood on a regular basis to rid the body of excess iron, but I would get a diagnosis of it first.

I've been getting blood test each year for the last 7 years and iron overload has never been a problem. I'm 50 years old. Is it possible to get hemochromatosis this late in life?

    Re: Iron Count too High

IF if do have it, yes symptoms normally appear in men between the ages of 30-50. It is more common in men than women, it also can be genetic. The showing symptoms most complain about is joint pain, then fatigue, lack of energy, sex drive, etc. I think you could probably find alot more information, if you posted on the Blood Disorders board with your number count. I know quite a few there that have the condition, and could possibly tell you more about it, and exactly what tests are needed, as it goes undiagnosed quite often.
