    My gross tonsils

About a month and a half ago I developed a really bad strep infection. It took 20 days and two different anti-biotics to clear it up. It was very severe. Now it is gone, but my tonsils have huge craters in them. There are these gross, nasty smelling, hard green things in them. My breath is terrible. If I look in the mirror I can see them. Sometimes I stick a q-tip back there and get them out. But then my tonsils bleed. I don't want to give myself an infection by picking at my tonsils. I gargle with Listerine afterwards. Ia it OK that I do this? Am I going to hurt myself?

Should I be seeing an ear, nose and throat specialist?

After numerous strep/tonsillitis illnesses myself, Ive developed those craters in my tonsils....Ive had them since ive been about 10....im 21 now..every now and then ill get little white things that smell bad in them, but dont affect my breath...my guess as time progresses you will develop less bacteria/food in these holes which cuase bad breath....dont over pick at them to the point where they bleed...i can usually get them off with my tounge if i lightly scrape at it enough......anyhow, go to a doctor if youd like, but i think having them isn't that abnormal and its jsut a collection of bacteria and food...

I have the same craters, too. Do a search for "tonsil stones" on this board. There's a lot of posts about them! GL and don't worry.

I had quinsey twice when I was about 7 and was in hospital seriously ill. I had craters in my tonsils after too. But I had my tonsils out so I'm not really sure if you could be doing yourself harm. I think the best thing to do is see your doctor. Maybe you need to have your tonsils out

    Re: My gross tonsils

Well, I made an appointment to see an ear, nose and throat specialist for tomorrow. My left tonsil is huge again, and it is painful to swallow.

It has a crater in it that is about the size of two peas put together, and is fairly deep. It also has lots of white stuff coming out of it, and it hurts. The right one also has a fairly large crater as well but not too much coming out of it. I feel like there is something stuck in the back of my throat all the time. Food gets caught back there and I choke.

I am afraid he is going to tell me I need to have my tonsils taken out. I am not afraid of the surgery, but I don't have time for it! I am a teacher! I can't have throat surgery! But if I have to, at least the summer is coming up. I'll let you know what the doctor says tomorrow night. Thanks.

How did you Doctor visit go? I'm curious as I'm battling strep throat/tonsil issues myself. Hope it's ok-and you're right, it's almost summer, good time to do it for you!

    Re: My gross tonsils

I get that but not so pronounced. Every so often I can feel what seems to be a "popcorn shell" stuck on my tonsils. It's one of those little waxy white things surfacing through the skin of my tonsils. I'll start to cough the more it comes out and usually it will break loose and I'll spit it out. They do smell nasty and will make your breath bad. I would see a doctor and he/she may want to take your tonsils out since yours are so bad. I would gladly have my tonsils out if mine got as bad as yours.

    Re: My gross tonsils

I saw the ear nose and throat doctor on thursday. He said my tonsils looked infected and he saw lots of holes and craters in them. I told him I had lots of stones, so he gave me a mirror and a q-tip and told me to show him where I usually see them. He poked around back there and got out a really really deep one that he had to use vacuum suction to remove! Since my tonsils are so bad, he wants to remove them over the summer. It is going to be difficult because my mom has to go for knee surgery and I have two weddings to go to and would like tobe able to eat something! I have to go back and see him again on May 26th and we'll decide on a surgery date.

I am on an anti-biotic right now (Levaquin) because he wants to get rid of any possible leftover infection, since my tonsils are sooo huge! He also said that they are very irregular and misshapen. He's afraid I'm going to get an abscess from the stones if I'm not careful. I have to be very careful with anti-biotics from now on when I take them. I have always had a sensitivity to Penicillin, but never a full-blown allergic reaction. Since Ceftin worked so well for my last throat infection, he prescribed it again. I have taken it dozens of times before and never had a problem. It is a thrid generation Penicillin (Cephalosporin, to be exact.) I picked it up from the pharmacy yesterday and I took the first pill. About 10 minutes later I was in the bathroom getting ready to leave and my hands started getting really really really itchy. Nothing helped. Then they started to turn red and swell up. I walked out and said "Mommmmmmm, I think something is happening to me! Help!" We called the pharmacy to ask what to do, and they told me to take Benadryl. I took 3 25mg pills, and my mom called the doctor. By this time (about 5 minutes after it started) I was turning beet red and getting itchy all over my body. Then I started to shake uncontrollably. My parents called 911 and by the time they got there my pulse was racing and I was having tightness in my chest. They didn't give me any more Benadryl because I had already taken a lot. They brought me to the hospital in the ambulance and the whole time I was scratching and scratching and scratching. I kept getting redder and hotter. By the time we got there (maybe 15 minutes after the reaction started) I was in dire straits. My arms and legs were bloody from me scratching so much. My lips swelled up to about 5 times their normal size and I was burning up and my whole body was shaking. We pulled up and they rushed me in and the doctors were already waiting for me with a shot of Benadryl. They also gave me Prednisone and Pepsid (which absorbs the allergen.) I was also having shortness of breath. They told me I was having an Anaphylactic reaction. The Benadryl shot really worked though and within about 15 minutes after they gave it to me the itching stopped. But I was still shaking and hot and beet red. My eyes were red and bugging out of my head. It took about 2 hours after thye gave me the Benadry shot and the pills (pPrednisone and Pepsid) for me to get back to "normal" and then they let me go home after another hour or so of observation. Since the anti-biotic hasn't fully left my system yet, I have to take 50mg of Benadryl 3 times a day for the next 5 days. I also have to take 40 mg of Prednisone twice a day for the next 5 days, and 20 mg of Pepsid twice a day for the next 5 days. My ear nose and throat doctor told me to call him this morning and he would oprescribe a new anti-biotic. My mom called my uncle who is a pharmacist and he told her what would be good for me to take. I had Walgreens call my doctor in the morning and he prescribed Levaquin. I am still pretty itchy today and I was getting hot flashes earlier, but I am soooooooooooooooooooooo much better than I was last night! In the ambulance, I just kept telling the Paramedics not to let me die! I was terrified!

The pharmacist and all of the doctors said that it is not all that uncommon to develop an allergy to a medication even if you have taken it before without a problem. I picked up the new medication today and made sure to tell Walgreens to put it in my file that I am now HIGHLY allergic to any penicillin derivatives! What a night!

So yes, I will be getting my tonsils removed, and I will not be taking Peniciilin or any derivatives ever again in life!

This is what my skin looked and felt like!

    1. try taking zythromax it kills mycoplasma which sometimes get into tonsils

    2. have your thyroid checked, low thyroid means poor immune function

    3. take Zinc 50mg, Selenium 200mcg, Vitamin D 1000 IU daily. Each of these vitamins is known for their germ fighting ability. Also add a daily multivitamin just to cover possible holes in your micro nutrients.

My right tonsil was badly inflamed and the above recommendations worked slowly but well to fix things up.

    Re: My gross tonsils

I had those white things in my tonsils for about 10 years.Over time my throat became less sensitive to me sticking things back there and probing around getting them out. Finally one day I was able to push my tounge way down in the back and saw that on the way back of my tounge on the side of my throat where I always got the white things was a kind of white bump under the skin of my tounge about the size of a pea.I began wondering if this was the root of all my problems all these years and began my own little surgery of trying to remove the "cyst" as what I called it,although I don't know what it actually was.It took days, and days to be able to get the way back of my tounge (so far back you could barely see it) accustomed to being probed without gagging. Finally I could take the probing and I used I think a dull smooth surfaced butter knife and was able to push the white bump out of my tounge.Miraculously once I got that white bump out that was hidden in the back of my tounge my problem with the white thingys in my tonsils that I had for so many years finally disappeared.I've been white thingy free for about 3 years now.I suspect that the thing in the back of my tounge was what caused it all along and it was only a matter of time till it grew large enough for me to see it so it could be removed. But it was extremely difficult to see without pushing my entire tounge down as far as it could go in the back to just barely see it.Theres no way a doctor could have seen it just looking down my throat or even using those tounge sticks.

    Re: My gross tonsils

I actually see these white things (my doctor says they are called "follicular exudate") come out of my tonsils. I feel them in my throat, and if I look back there I can see them in my tonsils. I just poke the tonsil with a q-tip and these huge things come popping out. My tonsils are also VERY abnormally shaped.

I also noticed what I think is a small cyst in my throat, near my uvula. It was barely noticeable when I went to the doctor but it has gotten much bigger. I have to see him next week, so I'll point it out (he'll see it!) and see what it is. I have tried touching it with the q-tip but it doesn't come out or break. It also gets really irritated if I touch it, so I'll leave it alone.

My tonsils are always very red and irritated, and I always feel like I have two golf balls in my throat. Although when I push on them and the stuff comes out, they feel better and they decrease in size. I am currently on an anti-biotic because they are infected yet again and oozing with yellow stuff.

By the way, the stuff that comes out of my tonsils is not always white. It is usually green or yellow and it smells VERY bad! My breaht has been just awful! When he was looking in my throat I just kept apologizing for breathing on him! But I guess he is used to it! I like Orbit gum, and Listerine. I need to get those fresh breath strip things.

Thanks. I haven't tried Zithromax for this yet, but I have taken it many times before. The pharmacist also recommended it when I asked him what else I could take since I am now allergic to Penicillin. My primary care doctor checks my thyroid every year when he orders blood tests for my annual physical. So far nothing has been abnormal. And I also happen to have just bought Selenium because someone else recommended it for my immune system as well! I have been taking the Women's One A Day multivitamin for the past few months, too. Your suggestions are right on, but I am already doing them and still have these oozing, pus filled tonsils!b

    Re: My gross tonsils

When I was 18 (I'm 26 now) I started noticing these white spots on my tonsils, and when I poked at them with a finger, the white spots popped out like a pimple. They were off-whitish in color, hard, about the size of a large pea, and smelled like death! I was kind of freaked out, but they didn't really bother me except for the smell. This went on for a few months, until at one point I had to go to the hospital for a bad case of food poisoning. While I was at the hospital, I asked one of the doctors what these things in my tonsils were, and the doctor didn't know but thought it might be Gonhorrea! Anyway, now I was really curious what these things were, so a couple weeks later I went to see an ENT doctor and he took one look and told me the white stones were called tonsiloths and that the condition was called "cryptic tonsillitis". The reason the white stones appear is due to food, bateria, mucus, and dead skill cells sloughing off and getting caught in the pits or "crypts" in the tonsils. Everyone has these pits in their tonsils, but some people's bodies can't keep up with the amount of dead cells and food and bacteria that get stuck in the crypts, so over time all this crap gets stuck in the crypts and gets packed in there until it hardens into the stones. After years of this, you get these tonsil stones that you can pick out with a finger or q-tip. My ENT doctor said that in most cases it's benign, but they can cause irritation and cause the person to be more prone to getting sick or sore throats. He said I had two options: have my tonsils removed or deal with picking the stones out for the rest of my life. I opted to have my tonsils removed, and so I had the surgery a couple weeks later.

The recovery wasn't too bad; I had the surgery on a Friday morning and I felt pretty crappy for the whole day, but that was mostly because I was coming out of the anesthesia and stuff. On Saturday I was much better, I was alert but I was in pain. The pain medication was pretty good at controlling the pain, but it's so hard to predict how anyone will respond. I was lucky in that I never felt nauseous at any point during the whole thing, but I know that's a fairly common reaction. I just rested for the weekend and went back to school on Monday. For the next week I was on basically a liquid and ice cream diet. The main thing you have to watch for after the surgery is that the scabs don't start bleeding, because that can be serious.

Anyway, my doctor read the report that the lab pathologist wrote when he examined my removed tonsils, and it basically said that my tonsils were larger than normal and that the crypts in them were filled with hundreds of whitish, hard, waxy, foul-smelling balls of cellular debris and bacteria. Mmm, lovely!

Since then (almost 10 years) I've noticed I don't get many colds, sinus infections, sore throats, or other related illnesses. Before my tonsils were removed, it was not uncommon for me to have 3-4 colds per years as well as strep throat and frequent sinus infections.

My advice (and I'm no professional) is to see a good ENT doctor. If he's never heard of tonsilloths, find someone else! Good luck!
