| Coughing small amount of blood
Hi all
Please help me with some relief.
I have mild coughing for two days, today I feel my throat is full with phlegm, therefore I enter my finger to my tongue base in order to stimulate my throat for pushing the phelgm out. I was shocked that my phelgm was mixed with small amount of blood. The blood is bright red and mixed with phlegm. The blood amount around half of a tea spoon.
Is it normal? Definitely I know I should meet my doctor, but since now is weekend I will delay my doctor appointment until Monday. I read in internet that if I don't have another symptoms such as nausea, difficulty to breath, hoarseness, chest pain, etc coughing blood is not an emergency situation.
Last April I have X-ray on my chest as part of my general check up, and no abscess,or abnormalities on my lung. I also feel this cough source is in my throat or esophagus not my lung. My cough is not so severe only I feel itching in my throat. Two days ago I took CBC w/diff, liver test, renal test, and blood clotting test and all results were normal.
Any relief and opinion? I only hope some of you have experience like me and come as benign condition.
Thank you very much
sincerely

Hi, I had a bad cold this Winter with a cough that was really phlegm-y, and I noticed some little streaks of blood, too. I freaked out, as you can imagine, and called the dr the next day. He said it was "normal" with a bad cough. Prescribed some codeine cough med & helped calm the cough. It's a good idea to get it checked with your dr, too, cause although a cough can cause this, so can many other things. You can call drs on the weekend, you know. They usually are on call or have someone on call. They know people get sick on weekends. Try a cough suppressant tonight, to see if it will calm it down. And sticking your finger back there, could you have sctratched it with your nail?

Thank you very much Hellasrules.
I drunk cough medicine and slept well last night. This morning my throat is not itching. However, I will go to the doctor next morning to ask for checking this, if possible I will ask CT scan also. I had cough with phleglm several times during my life but I never saw blood before. I never smoke nor drink alcohol and I just 28 years old.
Wish me luck.

This can also be very common with a sinus or other upper respiratory infection. You could also have a mild case of pneumonia. Most cases of this in someone your age are usually due to something minor.

Thank you BioAdoptMom3,you really help me
I don't have another symptoms, and I am quite sure the source is my throat and not my lung because my throat is itching. My friend who works beside my table has cough for the last 2 weeks, this could be contagious infection from him.
Thank you very much and wish me luck.
God...I am very nervous until I meet the doctor tomorrow.

Hi saw your thread, just a thought is the cough worse in the morning? I had something similar many years ago, turned out to be a post nasal drip due to bad hay fever, the streaks of blood were from the back of my nose, my throat used to itch like crazy!!

Hi HellasRules, BioAdopt3 and Wendysetter
Came to ENT today, and he examined my throat. The diagnosis was viral pharyngitis and he only gave me gargle medicine.
He said I should not nervous about coughing blood two days ago because:
1. I had clear chest X-ray just 2 months ago.
2. My lung voice when I breath is very clean, if I have lung problem my breath will be noisy in his stethoscope.
3. I just had blood test 5 days ago and everything cameback normally. ( I asked this blood test to hematologist because I always afraid about Leukemia everytime I got cold or sore throat).
4. The amount of blood was very little and not continously.
5. I don't have fever, etc.
He only said I should not drink cold beverages or eat fried or spicy food for a while.
So that my experience of coughing blood, I wish my gargle medicine could cure my paryngitis.
Thank you for all wishes.
