    Question Prednisone & Weight Gain?

Starting soon, I will be taking Prednisone, 20 mg daily, for a suspected auto immune disease that invovles double vision.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone regarding weight and Prednisone. Or, other side effects from it. I am hoping that calorie and salt control can help in avoiding weight gain. Is this true?

How effective was the medication in helping with the health issue.

    Thank you,
    Sara

Steroids cause an increase of appetite and also fluid retention. Be sure and keep sodium level down and keep tight control of your appetite. It will slip up on you without realizing you are eating more, thus, extra pounds very quick.
Ask your doctor about taking a diuretic to help offset fluid retention.

    Misty,
Thank you SO much for the information. I certainly will ask the doctor for a prescription for a diuretic. I will start paying very close attention to the sodium levels on the labels and also toss the salt shaker and keep lots of fruit and vegtables around the house. I really appreciate your reply.

You don't say how old you are, but that you're going to be taking prednisone for an auto immune problem. Make sure you have the doctor watch your blood sugar levels, have an eye doctor watch your eyes for cataracts, and if you're older that you watch out for stress fractures. I don't want to scare you, but I took prednisone for a long time and it did a lot of damage. The problem is that it works wonders too.

    Good luck

Not sure how helpful this will be, but I had to take 40mg a day for 3 days...first day I couldn't sleep and when I did sleep anything little thing woke me. I was hyper for the whole 3-4 days I was on it and didn't sleep much at all. I ate a little extra, but because I couldn't sleep, I tryed to tired myself by doing extra exercise, which I think countered the extra food.

I was on a 3 week taper...30,20,10. Didn't change my diet, increased excercise and gained 7 lbs. I took it for allergies, worked great but Dr. would never prescribe it again.

Oh Boy Do I have a story to tell you!!!!!!
My son was put on a low dose of prednisone daily for 7 months because his asthma was so bad and out of control. After being on it for 6 months, he went from 20 mg done to 10mg, after 2 weeks we went down to 5mg for a week and then he had to take 5mg every other day for two weeks and then we were to be off the prednisone. After being off it for about 9 days, He started getting really sick, He had flu symptoms-(vomiting, achy joints and very tired), after 5 days of this he ended up the the ER to get I.V.'s because he was so dehydrated, we went home but the symptoms never stopped, still so sick, we went back to our Doctor, they ran a bunch of test and found out my son had secondary Addison's disease, his adrenal glands had totally shut down from being on prednisone for so long. I almost fell off my chair when they told me, my son was 16 years old at the time. I had no idea that this could happen from taking that medication other wise I would not have allowed it. It's okay to take it for a short time like to weeks but for a long time, I would not recommend it.

    Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

    Hello Sara,

We all have different stories about prednisone and mine is that I have been taking it every day for over 30 years. I gained weight initially as I was on massive amounts, but over the years I have increased/decreased the dosage but I have not had any weight fluctuations because of it. Maybe my body is so used to it now I really don't know the reason why I don't gain weight. Some people I know have so many different things that happen with steroids and others I know don't. This is just my story though.

As someone else said, it has its downside and I have also had complications caused because of taking steroids, but in the main had my parents not taken the decision for me to have this medication when I was a child, then I would not be here. It saved my life, and at the time I was started on it was the only available drug for me. I have SLE and also lots of other medical problems and it is this medication that saved my life.

As with any medication, it is the choice of the patient, or in the case of a younger child their parent or guardian. Always ask questions and get as much information as you possibly can, and way up the downside of any drug as well as the upside. It is your body and you have the choice of what to do in regard to your treatment.

Please take care and I hope things go well for you.

Question Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

    Goldenwings,
Thanks SO much for the response. I still have not made up my mind, but I am pretty miserable with the Myasthenia Gravis my symptoms are suggesting. I am glad it helped you. What is SLE?

    Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

    Hi Sara,
Did they say if they want you on it for a short time or for a long period of time. I have taken prednisone for many two weeks or so when I had pneumonia or bronchitis, but really no longer than that. Prednisone dose help and it is a good drug but not for long term. The first year my son was diagnosed with Addison's disease, we really went threw some tough times, he was sooo sick and we had to get I.V.'s in the ER almost every other week for nine months, he had home and hospital tutoring for two years so he could get his education. He had to have physical therapy to get his strength back from being is for so long, it was tough but he made it threw and he is doing so much better. He has gained allot of weight from the steroids, it's like a puffy weight but I thankful he is doing so much better.

    Re: Prednisone & Weight Gain?

    Hiya Sara,

Good luck with your decision making. As I said just look into all and every treatment offered and then weigh up the information and this will be a big help, as will what you are currently doing, asking the advice and for the input of others. Some people need only short bursts of steroids to bring their condition under control and then to either eradicate it completely or at least to bring it under control and to make your symptoms manageable. I hope you are one of these people.

SLE is systemic lupus erythematosus - lupus for short - which is an auto immune illness too. There are various forms of lupus, the one I have affects my internal bits to a quite serious degree, as well as showing exsterrnal signs but again that is just me. Not everyone with SLE will have serious organ involvement as I have. There are also types of lupus that can affect the skin only.

I also have a nerve and muscle wasting problem, not MG, and I do know of the affect of this type of thing going on, and the lengths to which we will go for treatment and help. Good luck.

As I said previously Sara, the choice is yours and I have only told you of my own personal life with prednisone. All of my adult life taking it, but worth it for me to still be here.

    Take care
