    Severe Dizziness with Nausea

    Hi All:
Since this, past Summer I have been experiencing 'severe dizziness' and 'nasea,' once awhile. This episode occurs after feeling slight-headache.

On this, I went to 'Ear Specialist,' as suspecting that my inner ear has some problem. However, the doctor ruled out not any issues inside my ear, as rx'ed 'Meclizine 12.5 mg. ... take one tablet three times a day. However, this med. seems only temperary relief, not permanent relief for which I am looking.
Also, he told me that sometime catching-cold triggers this, 'dizziness,' however in the past, I had one, ... but not this magnitude of dizziness that made me feel whirl-swirl feeling, like someone lifting me in the air very rapidly. After laying down on the couch for about 45 minutes and vomitting some, I feel somehow OK, but still not perfect feeling.

This, severe dizziness and naseaous feelings does not occur often, three times since this, past summer, however this still makes me scared to the death, as thinking of the time when I need to drive. # of episodes do not matter to me, as seeing 'severity' of dizziness I have been going through.

Could this, severe dizziness and nausea be something related to neurological problem? In the past, I had 'mild tremor' after my cataract surgery. Then, I may have some sort of neuro. problem? My blood pressure is not perfect but not manageable. I am in my late '50, heading for 60 soon. Otherwise, I am healthy, both physically and mentally.

Thanks for any inputs on this regard.

    Re: Severe Dizziness with Nausea

Oh my goodness! That is terrible!!

I get the same thing, except the nausea isn't that intense for me.

2 years ago I was ice skating and I fell backwards and hit my head on the ice. I blacked out and got a concussion. Just this past year I would get nausious, dizzy, and got these stabbing headaches. I went to a neurologist and got an ENG. He said that he wanted me to go to Vestibular Rehab once a week, and I did. What they found was wrong there was that it the fall damaged part of my brain and that my balance system was off. They also found that the crystals in my inner ear were out of place. There are excercises that I do and they are helping a lot!

Have you ever had a closed head injury?

You definately should see a neurologist.

    Feel better!!

    Re: Severe Dizziness with Nausea

    Hi:
    Thanks for the response.

    I never got brain injury.

Only thing of which I can think is that I got a very, severe and bad reaction to the anesthesia upon my cataract surgery, years ago. Then, I might have some issue on this, ... either I was born this way, easy to get dizziness or I'm very sensitive to anesthesia. Because, when I got severe reaction to anesthsia performed by my gynecologist when my son was born that happened in my younger age, severe vomitting on the table that embarassed me a great deal.

Yes, ... I have an appt. with my neurologist who rx'ed when I had 'minor tremor' that caused me to tremble my head, as if I exposed to the very, chilly winter cold. For this, he rx'ed Inderal(sp?) that I took for about three years with minimum dosage. Now, I do not have one. But, this, severe dizziness with nausea might be somehow related to my past history, 'minor tremor?'

What I concern most is that this symptom getting bad to the point where number of incidents(dizziness) would increase not to able to function even daily chores. Then, I certainly consult with my neurologist whether I need some test to determine my issue. In the meantime, I taking a med. rx'ed by my ear, nose and throat specialist who is very good at my 'sinus issue' that comes, once two years or so. Also, I got 'sinus surgery' when I was at age 14. One problem on taking a med. rx'ed by ear doctor makes me VERY drowsy, then I can not take it during the day. Wonder what form of med. others with dizziness taking?

Thanks for your kind and thoughtful response.

    Happy Holidays!

    Re: Severe Dizziness with Nausea

I have been hospitalized for these very same symptoms 3 times. Each time I was diagnosed wrong and as having a stroke.

After much ado , it was concluded it was vertigo. The fluid in the ear does not lrevel off as quickly as it should when moving about. I take a drug called SERC and seems to help. After these episodes which take a fews weeks to get over, I am fine . I am 59 , male and apparently this happens to men more than women around this age.

Some times it is called Menieres disease, if you also having ringing in the ears.

    Good luck!

I do not think there is a CURE for it though.
