Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
I sometimes get these dizzy spells, somewhat like something called Benign Positional Vertigo, but it happens for no real reason as far as I can tell…not when I’m up high or anything. Usually I get out of bed and it’s there, and the world is spinning and I can’t walk or stand or even sit properly without feeling this gravitational pressure, pushing my head left and also downward…it’s sort of like something’s suddenly detached in my brain and floating around, instead of the normal grounded feeling of being “anchored” to myself and the world around me…it’s quite horrible and generally lasts for a few hours before I can walk properly, though afterward I still feel quite floaty and vague…

Anyway, it happened yesterday morning when I woke up and took hours to go away, but then I was ok, except from the time I got up, also for several hours, my chest felt all sort of achy and tight and tense, and I noticed my heart was beating in my stomach. You could literally see the skin being pushed out every time it beat, and feel it really strongly through the stomach…and yet in the chest area, there was absolutely nothing! Had my heart somehow migrated to my stomach and this is what caused the dizziness?

I also noticed the back of my neck almost where it meets my head, was tense and a bit sore. I wonder if I’d somehow had a migraine or something in the night or some other odd thing, like a stroke…

I went to the doctor about this the last time it happened (about 4 months ago) but they said it’s hard to tell what could be causing it…do I need a CAT scan or something? I’ve had aura migraines in the past…maybe they’ve damaged my brain in some way.

Has anyone else had this?

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
My sister has vertigo, and at times it can keep her house-bound for a few days. They've done every test imaginable and still don't know what causes it or why she has it, but she has finally gotten a good medication that makes her feel better when it starts up again.

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
What you are describing is a form of Vertigo~ there are two diffrent kinds.
Subjective vertigo where you feel the movement, and then there is objective vertigo where it feels like your surroundings are moving or spinning.
usually the most common cause for vertigo is inner ear disorders, BUT there are several other causes as well... MOST being not so serious.
Vertigo is the illusion that you or your surroundings are moving. You may feel that you are spinning, tilting, rocking, or falling and most times swaying mostly when standing still. Here are some common reasons for vertigo~
One being Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common form of vertigo and is characterized by the sensation of motion initiated by sudden head movements.
Then there is the inflammation within the inner ear. This is known as labyrinthitis. This condition is characterized by the sudden onset of vertigo and may be associated with hearing loss.
Meniere disease, is composed of the following symptoms: episodes of vertigo, ringing in the ears, and hearing loss. People have the abrupt onset of severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, as well as periods in which they are symptom-free.
More serious causes is called Acoustic neuroma this is a type of tumor causing vertigo. Symptoms include vertigo with one-sided ringing in the ear and hearing loss, vomiting, headaches, weakness in certain areas of the body, and visual problems as well.
Vertigo can be caused by decreased blood flow to the brain and base of the brain. Bleeding into the back of the brain is known as cerebellar hemorrhage and is characterized by vertigo, headache, difficulty walking, The result is that the person's eyes gaze away from the side with the problem. Walking is also extremely impaired.
Vertigo is often the presenting symptom in multiple sclerosis. The onset is usually abrupt, and examination of the eyes may reveal the inability of the eyes to move past the midline toward the nose.
Head trauma and neck injury may also result in vertigo, which usually goes away on its own.
Migraine, a severe form of headache, may also cause vertigo. The vertigo is usually followed by a headache. There is often a prior history of similar episodes but no lasting problems, but keep in mind vertigo can be the only symptom with migraines, some migraines can be silent~ meaning no headache is present.
Then there is psycological vertigo~ which is a form of vertigo caused by stress, panic attacks, and anxiety. Other causes may include sinusitis, cardio problems, blood pressure (usually low) problems with hypothyroidism, high blood triglycerides, diabetes, and hypoglycemia, TMJ Disorder, viral infections, and problems with your neck as well as trigger points.
So you see there are so many diffrent causes and things to be ruled out. I have been a vertigo suffer for many years, that is where all my reasearch and knowledge has come from. I have seen ENT Doctors in the past, cardiologist, Nerologist, Physical therapist, regualr MD's
and still no diagnosis as to what the cause to my vertigo may be. I do have TMJ disorder, which is a problem with your jaw joint as well as neck and tigger point problems and headaches.. I also have vertigo only when walking, or standing. For me the symptom subsides when laying down. Anxiety Disorder usually goes hand and hand with Vertigo. As time goes on most vertigo suffers develop some type of anxiety disorder. So don't be surprised if as time goes on you start suffering from anxiety as well.
I would say your first step should be a visit with your regular MD Most times they can direct you to the next step towards the rule out process..
I hope this was helpful to you. Boxerlover:wave:

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
I too have been having the same feelings, since last October of 2006. It just smaked me out of the blue.. I was laying on the floor with my dog and turned my head to the right ...and swoop! The whole room tilted and slid! Ever since that day,I have felt like I'm on a boat and at times the room seems to be moving around me. Are your ears buzzing and ringing? Mine do. Last week I went to a specialist and they did a canalith repositioning. I felt great for about a week and then it came back. I am soooo tierd of feeling this way! I just want to be normal. It is a comfort though, to know I'm not the only one. Trying to explain this to others is very difficult. I have found that eating candied Ginger seems to help sometimes. I am thinking about going to a General Practioner and getting my potassium checked, my estrogen levels checked, Thyroid checked, and blood pressure, just to make sure that they are not a factor in this. (Being uninsured, I have to "plan" a trip to the doctor.) Have you noticed a foggy head feeling across the front of their head? I get it sometimes when I am having a very bad day and the dizziness is severe. I have read many posts and it seems that it is hard for the doctors to pin point what is going on with those of us suffering from these symptoms. I hope that you start to feel better soon. The tightness in your chest sounds like a panic response. Believe me, I am familiar with that. Take a deep breath and slowly spell R..E..L..A..X as you breath in. Then as you exhail spell "RELAX" again. Do this at least three times and you should feel a little more centered. This has worked very well for me when I am in a situation that is scary&stressfull. (i.e. the dentist, or when the room tilts away etc...)Hang in there!

My friend at work had this, turns out she had a touch of hypoglycemia and fixed it by having skittles by her bed and she downed a few every morning before she stood up... but only a real doc can tell.....

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
I'm sorry to say you have the classic symptoms of Meniere's Syndrome. It is an inner ear disorder. Can strike without warning. Symptons are vertigo (from mild to "true" vertigo), tinnitus (ringing or other perceived noises), and fullness in the ear(s). You need to see an Ear, Nose, and Throat doc. Call around and find one that specilizes in Meniere's if you can find one. There are specific tests to be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Some folks are treated with meds, some with surgery, some treated for allergies, or a mix of the above. Different things work for different people.

I've suffered from this since 1973. I had surgery on one ear in 1976 and have taken medications ever since. It worked well until my aging body started to react to the meds differently so am now working with MD to tailor the meds.

Lotsa luck,
Richard in Alabama

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
I was going to say I have Meneires Syndrome (mildly) and its seems a classic case of.

Go back to you Doctor and tell HIM what it is !!

Go do some searching online and you will probably see the similarities.

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
I too have all the aches and pains but i also have such
bad anxiety/panic attacks that i don't know what to do.
I am constantly crying, worrying, and thinking i am dying
everything hurts and my mind is always thinking it's gonig
to pass out. I get blurry vision when i feel this way. I am
sometimes able to control it alittle but usually it goes full
blown til i either need to go to the ER or i think i am dying
and run around waiting to pass out. This is some scary chit
for me. I have been going through this very very hard for the
pass year and it is not getting any better.
I can tell you that i get major aches and when i get one i usually
think the worse so all the others start.
Chest pain and back pain and stomach and arms and legs...chain
reaction...then anxiety, OMG i hope someone can help me soon..
I feel like there is no sense in living this way anymore..My life is
so not living as it is what's the difference?

You probably have meneires with the dizziness, but also i think you are suffering from anxiety. Go talk to the Doctor, try to get some answers, otherwise you will worry and worry.

Re: Unexplained dizziness…unable to walk
hi tina2367.
Just had a quick read through what you are going through. It does seem like a psychological disorder which may have given rise to other symptoms. But it can very well be the other way round. (ie these symptoms giving rise to anxiety)

It could hypovolemia which can explain most of your symptoms. Just low BP thats missing. if you have low BP it maybe a likely reason.

Have you had your BP checked?
