    Question Bone Graft

I was wondering if anyone could give me information or provide me with links to information about bone grafts.

I was in a severe car accident a year ago and fractured several bones. The shattered my right ankle, had surgery, 5 months later had second surgery to remove plates and screws....the doctor thought at this time that is what was causing continued problems I was having. After the second surgery I continued to have problems with pain and my ankle giving out. I was referred for a second opinion and just underwent my 3 ankle surgery. Prior to the 3rd surgery the doctor explained to me that an area of my bone had not healed due to the blood supply being cut off and that during the surgery he would drill holes to get the blood supply going again and try to remove as much scar tissue as possible. During surgery he found that particular area of my bone was dead and ended up having to do a bone graft. I did not realize until recently that bone grafts do not always take. How long after the graft do you have to wait to find out if the graft was successful? Any idea on complete recovery time? I am only 3 weeks post op, still on crutches and still in a lot of pain. I am hoping the bone graft will work and this will be my final surgery....however, several people that I have talked to have told me that even if the bone graft takes it takes a while for it to completely fill in the area of the bone that is dead. I would appreciate any information anyone has to offer on this subject. I was kind of shocked to wake up from surgery to find out that it was necessary to do a bone graft. The doctor did not realize the extent of the damage to the bone until he was able to get in there and look at it. Thanks in advance for any information!

Couldn't find much on allograft reconstruction on the .*** and .gov Web sites.

Based on my knowledge of bone marrow transplant, the major risks associated with transplants are failure to engraft; rejection [true for allograft - which means 'other's' body/tissue]; and, complications from anti-rejection therapy [e.g. prednisone]. Since the reason for the graft was not a disease, you've managed to avoid the fourth major complication - return of the original condition.

Most of the allograft work seems to have been done for cancer - so check some of the cancer sites for complications related to this procedure.

Avascular necrosis, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis are the major complications for allograft reconstruction. Medical sites related to scuba diving have good information on these problems.

Suggest you also try Duke University medical school - Duke has an excellent reputation for research/work in orthopedics. Also try the government [NIH] clinical trials site for a look at different therapies.

A couple of years ago, OPG [a bone growth regulating hormone] made the news in bone cancer and osteoporosis.

    Good luck,
    Jay
