    Post sprained ankle?

i've been looking around on health sites in relation to the sprained ankle and they all say things like "you MIGHT need crutches if it hurts too much to walk on it." hmm, it's been 27 days now and there is no way in hell i could walk. simply impossible. the ankle is fairly huge, my foot is swollen significantly too. it actually went down to almost normal size for a brief period after i started taking ibuprofen (i should have been taking it since the beginning) but a couple of times i've had to venture outside of my house to go somewhere for awhile and that means my foot isn't always able to be elevated. that means my foot gets all red and swells up. it seems odd to me that after a month my foot is still swelling whenever it's not elevated. there's also significant pain when i attempt to put full weight on my foot, in two places: under my heel (very bad) and under the right front part of my foot (same type of pain, not as bad). why the hell do i have pain in the right front part of my foot?

i was told i'd probably have to be on crutches for about two weeks. i went to the doctor after two weeks, my foot was still gigantic. he told me to take 1800 mg/day of ibuprofen. the swelling in my foot went down a lot after about two days. but i haven't seen much improvement since then. red spots on my foot are gradually disappearing, and the ligaments (i think they're the ligaments) above the heel on the back of my foot (both sides) might be getting a little better, but the general swelling seems to have gotten worse. of course that's just because there have been some times where my foot has been down for extended periods of time, but why the hell is that happening now? it's been a month! oh, and the doctor i went to after two weeks said i'd probably be able to walk in a week or so.

i'm desperate for any help or advice. thanks.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, after you sprain your ankle, you actually over strain tendons and can actually trear ligaments. These will certainly take longer to heal and sometimes you may be better off if you had broken it. After a really bad sprain, it can take as long as a month or more to heal. The tendon running up the back of the heel is the achilles tendon.

To help the healing process you need to use what is know as RICE, which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Basically, rest your ankle. Soak it in some cold water, but dip it in and out or wrap a bag of peas in a tea towel and put it on your ankle. This will help reduce the swelling. Compression, means basically put a bandage on it to help the swelling and elevate it as you have been doing.

There are two homeopathic remedies that may very well help you. These are Arnica and Ruta. Arnica is extremely good for any kind of trauma and can be used well for 'never well since' trauma. This should really help the pain. Ruta is very good for helping the healing process of tendons, ligaments and muscles. These can be alternated and you can two daily of each remedy for about three days to a week and watch and see if there is any improvement.

Acupuncture would also be very good for helping your ankle heal and would certainly help reduce your pain quite significantly.

There's a good chance you may have torn the ligaments in which case you might need surgery. See a competent orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation. Most soft tissue injuries are difficult to detect and therefore often misdiagnosed esp. if you have a high tolerance for pain.

    Hi,
I also sprained my ankle it has been almost a year since my injury thought but I thought I could offer you some information and advice.

When I sprained mine they x-rayed it and said it was not broke and I would walk in 7-10 days. In 5 days I had a huge foot as you described and I was black and blue from my toes half way to my knee and I couldn't bare weight

I went to see an orthapedic surgeon and he put me in a cast because I had tore Ligaments and my ankle was unstable.
Basically there are 3 main ligaments on the outside of the ankle and one on the inside. Sprains are graded:

Grade I- overstretching of ligaments, slight pain little swelling no instability
Grade II- partial tearing of ligaments, moderate to severe pain, some swelling some loss of use, and sometimes slight instability
Grade III- complete rupture of one or more ligaments, moderate to severe pain, significant swelling and loss of use, and marked instability.

Basically it was unstable because I had completely ruptured two and partially tore the other two ligaments and when I would put weight on my foot it would dislocate.

Just to let you know doctors rarely operate on sprains unless they are reoccuring sprains. I was in a walking cast for a month and went to thearpy for one month.

I had to get surgery in May but my problem was rare.

I would suggest that you have a specialist check your ankle they have stress test they do to see if ligamnets are slightly torn or completely ruptured and they will prescribe a treatment based on this information. If you have any questions just post back because I am not sure if I can let my email here Anyway keep us posted and good luck
