Angry chronic mucous discharge, stuffed nose..

    Hi All,
Making one more try to understand my problem that has been there since the past 10 years. I am 26 now, and since about past 10 yrs I have this white mucous coming up my throat which I have to spit out. It was worse before when I had to spit about 50 times a day! but it still is there until today, and I am at a loss to understand what is the problem. My nose remains gently stuffed most of the time, so I do not breathe very freely, though I do not mouth-breathe. When I bend and turn my head upside down (for example when looking for something below the bed) I sometimes feel this load on my head, the stuffed thing around my eyes. My digestion is not too great either. I often have hard and dark brown stools, sometimes two colored brown with yellowish. Sometimes i have constipation. For many years I had constant gas release problem, bloated feeling and shiny yellow and smelly and sticky stool. This has been better in the past 2-3 yrs, though it happens now and then.
Someone told me that the mucous is related to my liver dysfunction? that the liver produces the mucous that results in the discharge and stuffed head/nose. And that I may have chronic amoebic infection in my intestine? well the doctors disagree on this analysis. They do not see any relation between mucous discharge and bad liver.
I was a regular smoker from June 1997 to Dec. 2001, aout 4.5 years. Then I quit smoking, but it gave only minor relief. When I do physical exercise, running etc. I have to spit thick white mucous a lot and my mouth dries badly, and I have to drink a lot of water. If water is not there I can hardly do exercise, my chest burns. Ear-Nose-Throat specialist said my mouth is drier than normal. I weigh about 65 Kg and am about 5 feet 8 inches tall.
Can anyone relate? any opinions will be appreciated. And yes, I am male, and generally healthy otherwise.

You need to get a set of sinus x-rays to rule out a chronic sinus infection. Sounds like you probably have chronic sinusitis problems. Have the doc check your sinuses via x-ray and then work from there. There are many nasal spray medications he can prescribe that can help relieve some of the stuffiness. Also be sure you are using a good anitoxidant supplement along with your daily multivitamin to help keep your immune system healthy. Help keep your mouth moist by either sucking on hard candy or using saliva substitute. As for the constipation you need to take a fiber supplement like metamucil 2-3 times daily. Be sure to use either acidophillis capules or eat plenty of yogurt with live active cultures routinely to help keep your intestinal flora healthy. You mention the yellow stools at times so be sure your doc checks your stools out too. You really should get all of this checked out by the doc soon and be sure to mention all you current and past symptoms to the doc so he gets the complete picture.

Hi, i dont know but i have that problem with the mucuous too. Only mine is clear, and i always feel like ihave to cough it up. I think it comes from my head or back of my throat, post nasal drip. Its uncomfortable and yes its hard to spit up. Maybe you have allergies, allergies often play a big part in so many things, you wouldn't think it would be that, but often times thats what it is. There is so many things you can be allergic to, food, drinks, and even environmental things. Its worth to check into. Drinking water helps it alot, i personally try to stay away from anything with sugar as sugar makes more bacteria and causes more mucous to form. It also might be acid reflux. I would try some pepcid ac and see if that helps a little bit. Hope you feel better soon!!

My daughter has problems with mucous and sinuses. We have been going to multiple specialists for 4 years now.

I have been reading through this board for a while now trying to find others with the exact sypmtoms as her to try and help with a diagnosis.

Anyway, I will try to get to my point now. :-) Through reading this board it sounds like it's possible that you may have Excersize Induced Asthma. Check out the Asthma section and read through that and see if it sounds like what you are experiencing.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Wishes!

    Cece

    Hi,
Thanks for the replies so far. I have been putting off going to the specialist, but now I am going to do it. The problem I have is not something that makes me sick, but it is a nagging irritating mild headache with sruffed head and a discharge of small quantities of white lumpy mucuous. Yes it does give me bad breath at times. As soon as I find out I will post the reasons for it. It increases with exercize but it is not triggered by it. I have seen the suffering of Asthma patients, touch wood and Thank God mine is not like that.

I don't recall reading this, but do you by chance have any pets in your home? Among many possible environmental allergens, pets, plants, pollens, etc.. could be present which are causing the chronic problems. In addition to other good advice given above, I would recommend possible allergen testing.

Irrigating sinuses with salt water solution has worked well for my family and friends.

This will clean out the sinuses and reduce amount of sinus drainage down throat.

1 cup boiling water, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda. Stir well, strain thru paper coffee filter. Put in clean nasal spray bottles. Add 1 or 2 drops plain glycerin per bottle. Allow to cool.

Lie on bed on back with head hanging off. Squirt salt water solution in nostrils, turn head from side to side. When ready to get up say "KKKKKKK" this will keep solution from running down throat. Do this twice day and you will see an improvement.

Doctors are now beginning to use this old time remedy again.

Do you use the whole cup of water at one time.. or do you save it in the bottle for the next time??

No, do not use the whole cup each time. Put saline solution in nasal spray bottles and use to squirt about 4 good squirts in each nostril. You can sorta tell when each nostril has enough.

Solution keeps well for 2 weeks, then, make fresh.

You can make smaller amounts if desired. Just keep the same ratio.

I usually make the 1/2 cup amount since I do not have to use it as often as in the past.

I bought the stuff today to make this concoction.. but I didn't buy the coffee filters. When I boiled it all together there didn't seem to be excess stuff so I hope this is OK. I don't drink coffee and I don't understand how the paper filters work.. I looked at them in the grocery store and they look to thick. Is there any special kind I should use.. the next time I make it I will use it if I find what kind you tell me to use.
Thanks again.. I sure hope this works

The coffe filters I use are so old but still serve the purpose. Any regular size coffee filter should do. Check at grocery store and buy the cheapest in smallest quanity.

The solution usually has some graineness and I feel it best to strain it out.

You could use a white cloth from maybe an old pillowcase, handkerchief or other that would not have lint or fuzz.
