weird skin problem, please help

I'm going to crosspost this to acne because it's skin related.

I am 18 years old now. Ever since I was 14 I have had extreme problems with severe itching. My skin turns very blotchy red in the affected area (before I itch or otherwise irritate it futher).

The following will cause an outbreak immediately with me:

* eating a spicy food of any kind (I tried giving up spicy foods -- didn't help)

* going from a cold temperature to a warm temperature

* weathering any heavy clothes including jackets and sweaters of any material type (I have tried switching types of clothes)

* embarrassment or stress will worsen the condition after it occurs, but do not usually cause it

* random -- sometimes it will just "happen" with no warning or "reason"

I have tried:

* switching types of clothing
* eating different foods
* I do not drink soda
* I do not take any medication, not even OTC
* very light clothing
* very warm room at night... cold room at night... normal temp... none made a difference
* avoiding spicy foods since this seems to set it off
* changing types of soap
* changing clothing detergent
* no pets
* i have even moved into a different home!

NOTHING helps!

This summer I got a brief reprieve... but it's been back with a vengence. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif">

Any ideas ? Anything ? I am about to go to a doctor because it is starting to interfere with my personal life and work life.

One thing to add...

the afflicted areas from most often to least is:

* back, lower and upper
* face
* sometimes both but not always
* legs
* back of hands (so bad I have to bite the skin to stop it)
* thighs
* neck

Michael, there are several conditions that cause itching on the skin. Many more that I'm not familiar with. Your best bet is to see a doctor and tell them, so they can follow their diagnostic protocol.

some of the reasons that come to mind.

-something you are ingesting, example: Large doses of niacin will cause a body flush that lasts for a couple of hours. Feels like pins all over your skin.

- Allegies or hives due to something you are eating, rubbing on you or rubbing up against. like laundry detergents, something you eat grequently, preservatives.

- Thyroid problems, and other internal organ malfunctions can cause severe itching.

- Dry skin, seborreic dermatitis.

Only your doctor can tell your for sureby looking a some blood test results. If it turs out he can't help, you can still go to a doctor and get some allergy tests done.

good luck

It sounds like an allergy to me (sometimes it is hard to pinpoint what causes some allergies). I agree with Moon that you should see a doctor.

I also think you should see a doctor, but I recommend you see a HOMEOPATH. Your problem is probably not only medical.

Dear Michael,
For years my husband went nuts itching his skin on arms, legs, scalp, etc. His scalp would turn bright red and welt up and blister and skin would come off in chunks. Kind of gave the appearance of dandruff but much worse. His skin would come off in chunks other places also. He thought for years it had something to do with soda pop, or shampoos, or water, we moved, we took clorine out of water, we tried laundry soaps,etc.

It turned out to be sceriosis. It is a skin condidition. (I know there is a liver condidiont by same name) What it is his body produces to much skin and it needs to come off sooner. There are prescription oils, loitions, etc. to help eleviate the condition but it takes a dr. to help.

I say all that to say this, skin conditions are not easy to diagnose. You need to see a dr. the sooner the better and the soonerr you will find relief. Don't put this off. There is an answer out there for you. Good luck!

I agree with the general consensus that you need to see your family doctor. If he isn't familiar with your problem, ask him to send you to a specialist such as a dermatologist.

In the mean time try taking a dose of Benedryl with breakfast, lunch and dinner.It's OK to use the store brand. Benedryl is good for all kinds of allergies. You could also try Benedryl cream directly on the outbrakes.

Regardles of the outcome, go see your doctor.
