help please! constant severe joint pain...

Hi, I've been lurking around this site, as well as many others, for a while now to try and get a better insight into what might be causing my various health problems. Today I finally decided to register as a member and am hoping you guys can help me find out what's wrong!

    I'm a 19 year old female.
When I was just a month old I had viral meningitis, this was treated straight away and am only mentioning as I don't know if it can cause problems later on in life...
When I was a toddler I had severe pains in my legs which prevented me from walking for more than a few minutes, these were simply diagnosed as growing pains.
About 9 years ago I started having problems with my ankles as I was always twisting and spraning them. About 5 years ago I started having problems with my knees and out of the blue one day I dislocated one of them.
For a year now I have been getting severe pain in my hip joints, they constantly crack really loudly and some days I can barely walk because it hurts too much to do so. The only way I can describe it is that it feels as though they need 'oiling'. It also feels as though they're carrying to much weight but at 5ft3 I weigh 8 stone and wouldn't be advised to lose any weight.
I've also recently discovered a lump at the bottom right side of my back which inflames and hurts after mild excercise.
I have undergone several blood tests including arthritis and coeliac disease which came back negative. The only thing I have been diagnosed with is anaemia and am currently half way through a 6 month course of tablets.

My doctors don't seem to be able to find out what's wrong with me so I'd really appreciate any help you can offer me. Thanks!

Have you had your vitamin B12 and Vitamin D levels checked?

What other supplements are you taking?

How is your diet in general?

    Have you seen a rheumatologist?

You've been through way too much for someone of such a young age.

Re: help please! constant severe joint pain...

I'm not very good at the proper medical terms, sorry! But as far as I know I've only been tested for iron, ferritin, coeliac disease and arthritis.

I take ferrous fumarate tablets 3 times a day but that's all.

I'm a vegetarian which I realise is probably what's caused my iron-deficiency anaemia but in spite of that I have a relatively balanced diet consisting of fruit, lots of vegetables, pasta, eggs, potatoes...etc.

I rang my medical centre today and booked an appointment with a doctor so I can be referred to a specialist at my hospital as I don't think that they seem to be doing enough to figure out what's wrong... so hopefully I'll have an appointment with a rheumatologist in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for getting back to me, also, I don't know if your username has anything to do with your real name but the q in mine stands for my surname Quince... strange coincidence!

do you eat properly? drink enough water? do you do any excercise?

i'd get that lump checked out. It may be unrelated but its better to be sure.

    do you get cold sores?

    Thanks for replying mikeyc86

I believe I eat really well, admittedly I don't drink enough water as I should but I never have been one to drink much and never suffer from dehydration.

I used to go to the gym twice a week but because of my joint pains it hurts too much, however I do a lot of walking (despite the pain) as i have no other form of transport.

And no, I've never had a cold sore.

hrmmm well i'd suggest adding a little bit of fish to your diet, a little more fluids and maybe trying swimming for a while instead of the gym.

and i know its hard, but try not to get stressed, as it can make joint pains worse, and your perception of them worse too, leading to a vicious cycle.

i'd also suggest a visit to the GUM clinic if you havent tried that already. It may be embarassing but its certainly better than the alternative

Re: help please! constant severe joint pain...

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I won't be adding fish to my diet as I'm a vegetarian and no matter what health complications I have I won't eat anything with a pulse. But I am going to start drinking a lot more water now it's been pointed out.

I'm not too stressed about it all, it's been going on for way too long for me to get too bothered about it, the only thing that gets me down is I shouldn't have to be in pain when I walk a couple of metres at the age of 19, but I guess that's the way it is.

And why would I need to visit a GUM clinic?

suit yourself. the great warrior-poet kurt cobain said fish dont have any feelings though.

as for GUM clinic, was pondering possibility of pelvic inflammatory disease. this can make your hips hurt.

you dont seem concerned about this lump at all anymore, has it gone?

Re: help please! constant severe joint pain...

Haha... Even before i became vegetarian I hated the taste of fish and seafood, its mainly to do with personal preference. I don't want to come across as preaching about vegetarianism!

I've checked the causes for pelvic inflammatory disease and there's no way I could have it, also those aren't my symptoms. It's the joints themselves that hurt I have no pain or discomfort in my pelvis or lower abdomen, and don't have nausea and vomiting...

The lumps always there it just get bigger when I'm up and about doing stuff and it hurts. I havent mentioned the lump to my doctor as I haven't actually SEEN her in nearly 4 months, I just keep getting called in for blood tests that's why I've asked to see a different doctor and get referred on to a specialist... So I'll ask about that on Thursday and see what they say, I don't like worrying myself with things until I know they're worth worrying about.

    A breakthrough!
I've recently discovered that two distant family members suffer from fibromyalgia - after discussing symptoms it seems this may be what's wrong with me. (Although this is a condition mainly centred on muscular pain, not joint)
I'll have to discuss it with the doctor on Thursday. Finally feel like I may be getting somewhere with this

Re: help please! constant severe joint pain...

My new doctor seems to really care about my problems and seems annoyed at the way I've been dealt with by my previous doctors. We went through my symptoms, family history and did a physical exam and I'm being tested for rheumatoid factor next week and have an apointment to see her and discuss the results

Re: help please! constant severe joint pain...

I don't eat meat or fish but aside from that I eat a very good, healthy and balanced diet. I've also started drinking A LOT more fluids after mikeyc86 pointed it out to me.. so thanks for that! And as stated I take 3 ferrous fumarate tablets a day to boost my iron levels.
Why, what do you think it could be?
