10 year old with itchy tongue

My son is ten and for past 1 1/2 years began having severe itchy tongue which causes rubbing on teeth resulting in canker sore. He has been to pediatric, dentist, periodontist, two allergist and dermatologist. Biopsy showed only a canker sore which we feel is result of scratching on teeth. Tip of tongue only and has scarred tongue so much it has snake split. Currently getting allergy shots (began 3/2012) but no food allergies were detected. Currently on singulair, xyzal, flonase and patanase at bedtime. He's miserable and cries constantly. Only relief is temporary. We don't know what to do to help him. He only agreed to the terribly painful biopsy thinking it would cut the tip of his tongue off and it wouldn't reoccur. He is pitiful and we feel helpless.

This is heartbreaking! I really feel for your young son and you for the obvious stress and concern you have for him.

Considering the extent of the doctors and specialists you have seen to get a correct diagnosis, I can imaging you must be so frustrated.

A quick search of the internet did produce about five reasons for an itchy tongue, from bacterial causes, to environmental exposures, medicatons, even scarlet fever was mentioned. Have you gone through all the possibilities available online for ideas? Have you spoken to the pharmacist for possible drug interactions, or side effects of any medication he is on?

What creates relief? I would not quit until you find an answer, as I can see you are desperately trying to do. While I do not have the answers, I do hope this post will can offer some ideas that help you.

Please try and remain positive, and my heart does go out to you as a mother myself. No one wants to hear of a child with such an issue to try and live with. Give him a big hug, and let him know you are trying so hard to help him...Bless you

    Janet

Re: 10 year old with itchy tongue

I'm sure this has been looked into, but in case it hasn't, has anyone considered Geographic tongue? I've had it for years, possibly my whole life. You develop hive-like patches on your tongue, and various foods (citrus, hot and spicy, etc) can really hurt and cause it to flare up. In my case, I also have a huge crack running down the center that will bleed from time to time, especially after I've accidentally had hot Mexican food, or salty chips or lollipops that scratch. Your tongue also swells and scallops on the sides along your teeth since there isn't enough room for it, and I get painful bumps on the tip and sides that I will then accidentally bite over and over, like a canker sore. This may not be the case with your son, but I wanted to throw it out there as an option! There's nothing worse than seeing our kids suffer!
