    Wake up propped up

I have a very strange sleeping behavior that is just getting very old and I'm seeking help. Issue that I have is that when I wake up in the morning, or even in the middle of the night, I find myself propped up on my elbow with my shoulder and head up off the pillow. This is been going on for quite a long time, and it doesn't seem to matter too much what position I start out, although I usually fall asleep with my shoulder and arm under my pillow. Any suggestions, advice and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your help in advance.

    Re: Wake up propped up

I would wonder if you have a respiratory or cardiac problem that is causing shortness of breath during sleep. Some problems are relieved by being more upright, and you may be assuming that position to breathe more comfortably. I would try sleeping on a wedge pillow, like college kids use in their dorms, and see if that makes a difference. If it does, I would see a Dr. to check for things that might cause what is called orthopnea.
