Which is better for fine/thinning hair

I have got really fine hair which has been thinning over the last year due to thyroid/menopause/coming off bc (not really sure which of those has caused the problem, maybe all three ) I have had highlights for the last 6 years and the colour seems to add some body but last time I went to the salon I just had a darker colourwash. My hair is easier to comb when wet than with highlights which makes me feel that it's not damaging it so much. My problem is I liked the look of the highlights but am worried about wrecking my already wrecked hair! Is a colourwash kinder than highlights?
