    Chocolate and headaches?

Hey there, minor health question, but google is failing me in finding an answer.

I'm female, 45 years old. Just recently I've been getting headaches after eating chocolate. Not 'take an aspirin' headaches, but 'I just want to crawl in bed and whimper for a few hours' headaches.

It's not the caffeine, I can drink black coffee and my head doesn't hurt. It's not a lack of caffeine, I often don't have caffeine for a few days without a headache.

The only google results are for chocolate causing migraines or chocolate curing headaches. Nothing about chocolate causing headaches.

I do have one food allergy and the symptoms did start out as these type of headaches. But I don't know if a headache is sufficient justification to talk my doctor into considering allergy testing again. The food allergy is unrelated, it's to the tea plant.

Any ideas as to why chocolate would cause a really bad headache?

Fist of all, you can develop an allergy at any point in time, even if you have eaten something safely all your life...secondly, chocolate is never "just chocolate"....it always has something else in it- maybe you are allergic to one of the ingredients ?

I would definitely be seeing an allergist just in case you are allergic to something else...it cannot hurt!

    Re: Chocolate and headaches?

I tracked down the ingredients for two of the chocolate brands that caused a really bad headache before I realized the timing. The only things in common, other than chocolate/cocoa powder, is milk and soy lethicin. Soy lethicin is in a lot of other things that I eat that don't cause issues, including the toffee I've been eating since realizing chocolate is on the bad list. Milk doesn't cause problems at all when I drink a large glass or mix it into recipes. One has cocoa butter, the other has palm kernel oil, so the oil used is not the same.

Yeah, I think a doctor's visit is in my immediate future.

If you want to see if you are allergic to just chocolate you can buy a chocolate bar that is 100% chocolate with nothing added. I have been buying them from a big box store in my area. People buy them for baking but I like to eat them "as is" because I actually like the taste of pure chocolate. For about $2.49 you can save yourself a trip to the doctor.

Chocolate is also high in histamine.
